Chalmers will continue to discuss the role of technical universities for the society of the future with various actors when it arranges a seminar and two roundtable discussions in Almedalen later in June.

“It’s a little different from, for example, an opinion piece when we put forward our own message, argue and want others to join our view,” says Ingrid Claesson, Head of Communications at Chalmers. “Here, we rather invite to conversations so that different actors can give their views and then we see where we can meet.”

An example of such a conversation is Chalmers’ open seminar on the theme Teknikens roll: vår undergång eller räddning? (The role of technology: our downfall or salvation?) Here, Chalmers’ President, Martin Nilsson Jacobi, and the Foundation’s CEO Sara Wallin, among others, meet Spotify’s Head of Sweden Katarina Berg and Johan Paccamonti, planeringschef (Head of Planning at the Ministry of Finance).

The seminar is public, but in addition to that, Chalmers also arranges a couple of roundtable discussions for invited guests. The importance of a national agenda for deep tech will be discussed, as well as what is required for Swedish Universities of Technology to reach the international top level. Participants include KTH’s President Anders Söderholm, Social Democratic politician Daniel Vencu Velasquez Castro, the Swedish Research Council’s Director General Katarina Bjelke and Svenskt Näringslivs (Confederation of Swedish Enterprises) expert on higher education policy Ulrika Wallén. From Chalmers, Deputy Presidents Maria Elmquist and Susanne Aalto and Vice Presidents Anders Palmqvist and Mats Lundqvist participate.

“The most important thing here is that Chalmers should be part of important discussions about Sweden’s future,” says Vice-Chancellor Martin Nilsson Jacobi. “We have a clear picture of how we want Chalmers to develop, but the benefits of that development are largely determined in collaboration with the society around us. In addition, the conditions for Chalmers’ journey can of course be significantly improved if the political conditions are adjusted in various ways, but this of course requires that there is broad support for the idea that technical universities at international top level are of great importance for the competitiveness and welfare of the entire country.”
