The Swedish Higher Education Authority (UKÄ) has released the results of its thematic review of Swedish higher education institutions' collaboration with the surrounding society.

The review, conducted in 2024, does not include any grades, but UKÄ's assessment group provides a picture of Chalmers as a strong player in meeting societal challenges and collaborating effectively with the outside world. The group notes, among other things:

"Overall, collaboration appears to be a foundation for the institution in both education and research, and the institution has a clear identity based on collaboration with the surrounding society, especially with the business community."

"The outcome is not unexpected, but it is still very positive to receive confirmation of Chalmers' strengths," says Mats Lundqvist, Vice President for Utilisation, Innovation and Lifelong Learning.

The assessment group highlights several examples of how Chalmers links education to societal needs and strengthens collaboration in both research and education. Two of the initiatives particularly mentioned are Tracks and the School of Entrepreneurship.

"We can be proud of Chalmers' ability to contribute to societal benefit. The examples mentioned by the assessment group demonstrate how we are at the forefront of providing high-quality education that prepares students for current societal needs," says Mats Lundqvist.

However, the assessment group also sees some areas for development for the university.

"When collaboration is extensive and occurs at multiple levels throughout the organisation, it is a challenge to clearly describe governance and responsibility distribution. This is something we can work on. We can also develop our ability to showcase the societal benefit our collaboration results in," says Mats Lundqvist.

The review is based on a self-evaluation report that Chalmers sent to UKÄ at the beginning of the year, which has been reviewed by experts in the field. The report was prepared by advisors in the President's staff and Chalmers' quality coordinators, and the process included dialogues with faculty and key collaboration functions in innovation, strategic partnerships and school collaboration.

Chalmers will report back to UKÄ in two years on how the institution has worked with the assessment group's recommendations.
