The Swedish Transport Administration will fund a new competence centre in road engineering with close to half a billion Swedish crowns over a twelve-year period. The investment aims to overcome the challenges that the aging Swedish road network is facing in terms of increased transport and the impact of climate change. Among the involved parties is Chalmers.

The Swedish road network was developed for the needs of past times, at the same time as passenger and goods traffic has increased, transports have become increasingly longer and heavier and needs have changed, not least through climate change. New technologies such as electrification, digitization and automation also contribute to more road transport systems with higher complexity that must be built and maintained properly.

The new competence center will receive an annual budget of up to SEK 40 million per year between 2023 and 2034, and shall create prerequisites for using both existing materials and techniques, and the possibilities with new technology, new materials and new working methods. The investment from the Swedish Transport Administration will be translated into new research projects, strengthened specialist competence and generate new training and doctoral projects.

The centre partners are: Chalmers University of Technology, Lund University, Luleå University of Technology, KTH Royal Institute of Technology and The Swedish National Road and Transport Research Institute (VTI). The centre is coordinated by LTH, Lund University.
