Strong ties to the university and a key role in securing funding and in enabling the completion of several doctoral dissertations – the recipe for being appointed honorary doctor at Aalto University for Minna Karstunen.
The schools of technology at Aalto University, Espoo, Finland, have recently granted seven honorary doctorates to distinguished persons in the fields of science, technology and society, one of them being ACE’s Minna Karstunen. Minna Karstunen is a Professor in Geotechnical Engineering at the Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering and have been affiliated with Aalto University for some years.
– It is a true honor, and an acknowledgement of the fruitful and long-term collaboration we have had – and will continue having, says Minna Karstunen, and adds that, despite being delighted, the award took her by surprise.
The award presupposes “strong ties to Aalto University and impressive achievements in science and technology or significant contributions to other societal or cultural activities”, and the ground for Aalto University granting Minna Karstunen the honorary doctorate, tells about a comprehensive collaboration over the years:
“Karstunen has held a key role in securing funding for several national and EU projects, and these projects have further consolidated her collaboration with Aalto University’s Department of Civil Engineering while also enabling the completion of several doctoral dissertations. Karstunen has further contributed to students’ instruction as a teacher and taught on numerical methods courses at Aalto University. The instructional cooperation has supported researchers’ high competence levels in the geotechnics specialist area.”
The honorary doctorates will be conferred on 16 June 2023 in the ceremonial conferment of doctoral degrees at Aalto University.
