Specialisations
Programme description
The programme focuses on how aircraft, road and rail transport, and ships generate and use power, and how that picture is changing amid increasing demands for sustainability and the shift to electrification. A central theme is systems engineering: the ability to understand a vehicle or vessel as an integrated whole before working on any of its parts.
You will study in one of Scandinavia’s most important transport and freight hubs. Gothenburg is the largest port in the Nordic region, and many international companies are headquartered here, spanning the aerospace, automotive, maritime and railway industries.
First, you will gain a foundation in the principles that apply across all these sectors, before going deeper in whichever sector of transport most interests you. This includes a project-based course on systems and mechatronics, and the principles that apply across all different forms of transport, as well as propulsion and energy systems.
Other courses sit outside particular specialisations, covering electric machines and drive systems, systems engineering fundamentals, and data-driven engineering for connected fleets. These address the ways in which electrification and digitalisation are reshaping every mode of transport simultaneously.
Project-based learning is central throughout. You will work in teams of students of mixed backgrounds, learning key skills in communication and collaboration across academic and cultural borders. These are essential skills for further success in these industries. These projects also involve input and collaboration with external industrial partners in the region like Saab and the Volvo group. Chalmers has an extensive history of collaboration with relevant organisations, including shipping firms and railway operators. You may have the chance to complete your master's thesis directly with an industry or research partner.
Job opportunities
You will be well-prepared for all kinds of roles across the main transport sectors, which are all facing their own individual challenges.
The automotive industry, for example, is shifting to electrification, automation and intelligent systems integrated into vehicles. The demand for engineers with new skills to work with these areas is high across manufacturers, suppliers, and consultancies.
In railways, advances in digitalisation, electrification, and predictive maintenance are becoming increasingly essential to strengthen the reliability and resilience of ageing networks.There is a growing need for engineers across infrastructure management and maintenance as well as train manufacturing. Meanwhile, aerospace industries are having to respond to significant new environmental targets that conventional technology alone cannot meet. The industry needs engineers who can combine established aerospace knowledge in aerodynamics, propulsion and compressible flows, with emerging propulsion and energy technologies, such as alternative fuels.
The maritime sector is also responding to sustainability demands, including new laws on emissions and shipping fuels. The rapid global growth in offshore wind and wave energy also presents new ocean engineering opportunities.
As well as diverse roles across all these industries, the programme also prepares you for further studies at doctoral level.
Research
Chalmers has a long history of mobility research, centred around several nationally leading research centres, and you will feel the benefit of this throughout the programme. CHARMEC has over thirty years of railway mechanics research covering design, deterioration, noise and vibration. SAFER is a traffic safety centre hosted at Chalmers that brings together many of Sweden's traffic safety organisations, and its researchers often teach courses directly.
Other frameworks include TechForH2, which addresses hydrogen usage across different transport sectors, and the Lighthouse centre, a national organisation hosted by Chalmers focused on maritime research.
Chalmers is also a key partner in the national Swedish Electromobility Center, which connects universities with major automotive partners such as the Volvo group and Geely.
You will have the chance to carry out your thesis project across these research groups or potentially in collaboration with an external industrial partner.
Requirements
Bachelor's degree in: Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Vehicle Engineering, Automotive Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Civil Engineering, Engineering Physics, Engineering Mathematics, Naval architecture, or the equivalent
Prerequisites: Mathematics (at least 24 cr. including Linear Algebra, Multivariable Analysis, Numerical Analysis, Mathematical Statistics or Probability Theory), Mechanics (including Statics and Dynamics), Control Theory or Automatic control or Control systems, Programming
