New teaching rooms, upgraded and quieter study areas, and state-of-the-art course laboratories. The student areas are a major part of the ongoing refurbishment of the Chemistry Building, and several facilities are already in use.

The Chemistry Building has been undergoing extensive refurbishment since January 2025, affecting both staff and students.

“Our new environments will provide better conditions for all our activities, but we are aware that the refurbishment is causing disruption for both students and staff at the Departments of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering and Life Sciences,” says Ulf Jäglid, Assistant Head of Department responsible for undergraduate education at Chemistry and Chemical Engineering.

"Working environment for the students prioritised"

For students and undergraduate education, the refurbishment means new teaching rooms, study areas and course laboratories. In addition, the premises used by the student union’s technology section, KfKb, will be rebuilt and upgraded.

“The first phase of the refurbishment has now been completed, and we are proud to present new teaching rooms and state-of-the-art course laboratories for our students. Throughout the project, we have prioritised the working environment and safety of both students and teachers, this is extremely important to us,” says Ulf Jäglid.

Modernised laboratories

As part of the refurbishment, the new course laboratories will also be equipped with new instruments in order to keep the undergraduate courses in Engineering Chemistry and Biotechnology up to date and relevant.

“The teaching in the laboratories will also be modernised, for example through the installation of interactive screens that allow us to display information, deliver lectures or show our own instructional video clips,” says Ulf Jäglid.

Teaching rooms

  • A new teaching room (Kemi-L42) was completed in January 2026 on the entrance  floor of the Chemistry Building.
  • On the same floor, there is also an “Active Learning Classroom” (Kemi-ALC), which is a new type of teaching room focused on interactive learning and available for use by all teaching staff at Chalmers.
  • In 2027, an additional teaching room will be made available for undergraduate education.
  • The new rooms are complemented by new group rooms and study areas – more information can be found in the section “Study environments”.

Course laboratories

  • Six course laboratories on Floors 1, 2 and 5 of the Course Building have been refurbished.
  • A new laboratory for analytical and organic chemistry, as well as a human cell laboratory, are built on Floor 5. They are scheduled to be in use at the end of 2026.
  • In spring 2026, the refurbishment of the course laboratories on Floor 4 will begin, including the construction of special laboratories for chemical engineering and electrochemistry/battery technology.
  • A studio will be completed in 2027, where teaching staff from the Departments of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering and Life Sciences will be able to produce digital teaching materials.

Study environments

  • New study spaces and areas are completed near the new teaching rooms on the ground floor.
  • Additional study spaces are being created on Floor 1, adjacent to the new entrance at Kemivägen 10, and are scheduled to be in use in 2027.
  • Additional new study spaces and group rooms will be built next to the student union section premises on Floor 1 of Research Building 2, and they are planned to be in use at the turn of the year 2026/2027. A new kitchen will also be built here for use during larger student events. One of the student union section’s existing premises will be relocated in connection with the kitchen construction and will then have a new view overlooking the university library.
