Maria Taljegård and Adeline Jerome have been awarded this year's scholarship from the Gunnar Engström ABB Foundation. The scholarships of SEK 250 000 and SEK 100 000 respectively were awarded during the national energy conference HUB2023 in Västerås.

Maria Taljegård, senior researcher in sustainable energy and transport systems, has been awarded this year's scholarship of SEK 250 000 from the Gunnar Engström ABB Foundation. She was awarded the scholarship for her research in energy storage and intelligent charging for vehicles to electricity grids. It is an area that is expected to play an important role in the ongoing energy transition.

"I am very happy and proud to receive this award. It is a very interesting area with huge relevance for ABB, which is a leader in electrification and automation. With the help of the grant, I look forward to expanding my international network in this research", says Maria Taljegård.

Adeline Jerome, researcher in energy technology, has been awarded an additional grant of SEK 100 000 for her research on promoting high energy efficiency and circularity for electric motors. This is very important when updating European policy requirements for lifetime extension of energy-using products.

"It feels great to receive this award. With my research, I hope to contribute to the reduction of the environmental impact of industry. This grant will support my research visit to the Joint Research Centre (JRC) in Ispra, Italy. The JRC is a department of the European Commission that supports European policy development with evidence-based science and knowledge," said Adeline Jerome.

The award ceremony took place during the national energy conference HUB2023 on 16 November where Cathrine Helin, chair of the Gunnar Engström ABB Foundation, awarded the scholarship. She is responsible for automation research at ABB's Corporate Research centre in Västerås.

Since 2013, ABB has had a strategic collaboration with Chalmers University of Technology, which is an important partner in both research and skills supply.

"It feels great to be able to recognise Maria Taljegårds and Adeline Jerome's research in two areas with great potential. The results and conclusions from the research are of great importance and relevance to ABB's operations and we hope that with these scholarships they can further develop their research and implement the results in reality," says Cathrine Helin.

About the scholarship
The Gunnar Engström ABB Foundation was established in 1983 to provide scholarships to stimulate interest in research in the field of energy technology. Gunnar Engström was for many years director of Asea, now ABB. On his 60th birthday, he was honoured by the establishment of a foundation bearing his name.

The purpose of the Foundation is to support scientific research in the field of energy technology by awarding scholarships to researchers in this field working at one of the technical universities in Stockholm, Gothenburg, Lund, Linköping or Luleå or at the Faculty of Technology at Uppsala University.
