Albert Skegro, doctoral student at the department of Electrical Engineering at Chalmers, has been awarded this year's research scholarship from the Gunnar Engström ABB Foundation. He receives SEK 250,000 for his research on dynamic battery reconfiguration – a method that can extend battery life, reduce waste and improve system efficiency.
The scholarship was presented on 17 November in connection with the seminar "The Battery Breakthrough – Key to a Flexible and Resilient Power System?” at Chalmers. In the press release from ABB, Albert Skegro, says:
“I am very honored to receive this scholarship from the Gunnar Engström ABB Foundation. It gives me the opportunity to develop a physical prototype of a dynamically reconfigurable battery module and to take the research from simulation to practical application. The scholarship will also support international research exchanges and contribute to the dissemination of the results – also to communities with limited resources”
The award was handed over by Cathrine Helin, Chairman of Gunnar Engström's ABB Foundation and responsible for automation research at ABB's Corporate Research Center in Västerås, who comments on the recognition in the press release:
"It is very inspiring to draw attention to Albert Skegro's research. His work on dynamic battery reconfiguration is of great importance for the energy system of the future, not least when it comes to extending the life of batteries and enabling reuse in other applications. This is fully in line with ABB's ambition to drive electrification and circular economy through technological innovation," says Cathrine Helin.
About the scholarship
Gunnar Engström's ABB Foundation was established in 1983 and aims to stimulate interest in research in the field of energy technology through scholarships. Gunnar Engström was for many years a research director at Asea, now ABB. On his 60th birthday, he was honored by the establishment of the foundation that bears his name.
The purpose of the foundation is to support scientific research in the field of energy technology by awarding scholarships to researchers working at technical universities in Stockholm, Gothenburg, Lund, Linköping or Luleå, or at the Faculty of Engineering at Uppsala University.
