Chalmers is strengthening its research in materials chemistry and computer science through the recruitment of two internationally leading researchers. The initiative, worth a total of SEK 160 million, will help develop research environments in fields of major importance for future technology and innovation.
The recruitments have been made possible through support from the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation. The two researchers are both highly ranked internationally in their respective fields.

These individuals will be highly significant for the academic environment, both directly through their work here and indirectly by attracting greater interest from others to come here,” says Martin Nilsson Jacobi, President and CEO of Chalmers University of Technology.
The two researchers who will join Chalmers University of technology are:
Alexander Bismarck, Professor of Materials Chemistry at the University of Vienna. He will be active within the Wallenberg Wood Science Center (WWSC).
Julian Togelius, Professor of Computer Science at New York University. He will be active within the Wallenberg AI, Autonomous Systems and Software Program (WASP).

The background to these recruitments is that the strategic programmes and research centres supported by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation were invited to nominate senior researchers considered capable of complementing and developing these research environments. The researchers must be willing to relocate to Sweden and spend at least 80 per cent of their total working time at a Swedish university.
Together with the host universities, the Foundation has been able to offer recruitment packages worth a total of SEK 80 million per researcher, with the Foundation contributing SEK 50 million and the host universities SEK 30 million.
