How are the new undergraduate teaching facilities in Teknikparken at campus Johanneberg being used? A pilot project will investigate utilisation levels by analysing data from WiFi connected mobile phones, tablets and computers.
What is it about?
This spring, Chalmers Fastigheter and the Chalmers IT Department will carry out a pilot project in Teknikparken together with an external IT supplier. The project uses WiFi based utilisation measurement to understand how the facilities are used at different times of the day.
What is the purpose?
The aim is to test the technology to explore what is possible and, in the long term, to enable more strategic work with space efficiency, improved scheduling and wayfinding to available study spaces. The project forms part of campus development at Chalmers, testing promising technical solutions while ensuring that Chalmers’ premises are used in the best possible way. The purpose is not to track how individuals move or where they are located. No person can be identified, and no personal data will be traceable.
How does it work?
Mobile phones, tablets and computers connected to the building’s WIFI-network are anonymised and registered only at an aggregate level. This means that the system registers the number of devices in different parts of the building at various times – not which devices they are or who is using them.
When will this take place?
Measurements will begin on 20 April and are expected to continue for six months.
Which facilities are included?
The pilot project will be carried out in the undergraduate teaching facilities in Teknikparken at campus Johanneberg, including lecture halls, group rooms and study areas.
How will the collected information be used, and by whom?
The information will be used by Chalmers Fastigheter during the pilot project to understand how and when the facilities are utilised, and how many people are in the building at different times.
How is compliance with legislation and privacy regulations ensured?
Compliance is ensured by Chalmers’ legal experts and the Chalmers Data Protection Officer, who has reviewed the process in detail. Personal integrity is protected: all information that could be linked to an individual, such as IP addresses, is permanently anonymised before being transferred to the external data tool used to analyse utilisation levels.
The legal basis for the processing is a balancing of interests in accordance with Article 6.1 f) of the GDPR. You have the right to lodge a complaint regarding our processing of your personal data with the Swedish Authority for Privacy Protection (Integritetsskyddsmyndigheten, IMY), which is the supervisory authority in this area. Further information is available at imy.se.
