On 30 May, Chalmers held its traditional doctoral conferment ceremony at the Gothenburg Concert Hall, where 121 new doctors were formally conferred and celebrated with fanfares, speeches and musical performances.

At the opening of the ceremony, Chalmers President and CEO Martin Nilsson Jacobi expressed his personal admiration and pride on behalf of the entire university as he addressed the doctors awaiting the presentation of their insignia – hat, ring and diploma – by this year’s promotrix, Professor Lisbeth Olsson.

In his speech, he reflected on the symbolism of the ceremony, rooted in classical Greek mythology, in which each new doctor crosses Parnassus, the mountain of the Muses, Apollo and Dionysus. He noted how fitting this symbolism is for the achievement that a doctoral degree represents. At the same time, he added, the symbolic world of antiquity may not fully encompass our modern understanding of the societal value of academic research – a perspective that is ever present at a technical university.

“ We do not arrive at Parnassus simply to sit down and admire the view. No — this is only the beginning,” said Martin Nilsson Jacobi.

He went on to highlight how Chalmers’ first principal, the restless and endlessly curious Carl Palmstedt, can still serve as an inspiration today. Palmstedt continuously explored new fields and shared his knowledge with others through numerous publications.

Even before the event, this year’s ceremony had attracted media attention because a record number of doctors would be wearing the traditional doctoral hat. This was made possible by Chalmers purchasing and borrowing a large number of hats from other universities, allowing doctors who did not wish to buy their own to rent one instead. The initiative is intended to emphasise and preserve the academic cultural heritage.

Promotrix Lisbeth Olsson delivered a brief lecture on her own field of research, industrial biotechnology, explaining how enzymes and microorganisms can be used in processes that transform plant-based raw materials into important and beneficial products.

The jubilee doctors, who were originally conferred 50 years ago, were honoured with diplomas before this year’s two honorary doctors were conferred: computer scientist David Basin of ETH Zurich and chemist Michael Gordon of the University of California, Santa Barbara.

The central part of the ceremony then followed: the conferment of 121 new doctors upon completion of their doctoral examinations.

In addition, Ceren Altuntaş Vural, Senior Lecturer and Associate Professor in Technology Management and Economics, was recognised as Supervisor of the Year, having been nominated by the Doctoral Student Section.

One of the newly conferred doctors, physicist Martina Olsson, spoke about the use of X-rays, drawing on her own research, while Student Union President Tobias Filmberg delivered a speech highlighting the curiosity that unites all researchers.

Live orchestral music conducted by Anders Ottosson added distinction to the occasion. The Chalmers Hymn featured Ulf Schönberg as a bagpipe soloist, and the programme also included performances by the entertainment act The Opera Four and the Chalmers Choir.

Guests were welcomed to the ceremony by William Chalmers, portrayed by Philip Wramsby, and Catrin Lindberg served as compere.

Following the ceremony, the celebrations continued at the Student Union building on the Johanneberg campus with a banquet and dancing. During the dinner, entertainment was provided by The Opera Four accompanied by Anders Ottosson, as well as ExSpexors. The dance music was performed by the band Jazzklubb 11.
