Education CVA

The Center for Healthcare Architecture, CVA, collaborates within Chalmers in several educational contexts. This takes place in courses for students at bachelor's level but above all at master's level with a focus on healthcare buildings (Healthcare Studio and Residential Healthcare) as well as postgraduate education. In addition, CVA runs a continuing education course (Healthcare premises) in collaboration with Forum Vårdbyggnad.

Further education

We are committed to keep up to date on current research and method development related to improvement in healthcare architecture. With commissioned meant such education (courses, seminars and lecture series) that the university carries out. Our educational courses maintain the same high quality as the regular education at Chalmers.

The further education courses are in Swedish and you will find more information on the Swedish site. Use the "Svenska" button to switch versions and read the full tex.

Healthcare Studio: Future Visions for Healthcare, Housing & Work

  • Level: Master, 22,5 credits
  • Subject: Architecture
  • Examiner: Cristiana Caira

From course-PM year 2021

Purpose, learning objectives

Designing spaces for healthcare is one of the most complex and therefore challenging architectural design commissions there is. You must be able to handle intricate design tasks in which many and often conflicting parameters have to be prioritized and weighted with many stakeholders involved. In this process you are requested to create a high quality building design, coordinating a good, safe and secure patient environment combined with requirements for high-class work conditions, sufficient space for treatment, care logistics, advanced technical systems design etc. Also the urban context of the healthcare facility in focus needs to be considered.

The Healthcare Studio at Chalmers Architecture has a curriculum that is founded on a dedicated pedagogical vision. It combines explorative design exercises with analytical and systematic procedures, literature studies and organized reflection. The Studio works with context-rich "real" commissions that are a part of the planning processes in one Swedish County Council/ Region together with clients and users.

The students shall obtain general knowledge about and ability to design complex and sustainable healthcare buildings integrated into the surrounding environment and urban setting. This includes among other aspects.

  • Design healthcare facilities that supports sustainable development from environmental,
    social and economic aspects.
  • Work interactively with complex programming, combining spaces for care, patient
experience, work environment, logistics and architectural systems thinking.
  • Handle a design driven work method for complex commissions.

Master projects Healthcare Studio

Residential Healthcare - Housing for Seniors

The annual master studio at Chalmers Architecture and Civil Engineering, Residential Healthcare - Housing for Seniors, gives architect students the opportunity to work with aspects of housing and care for elderly citizens. We work with different types of housing for the elderly - both within special (assisted living) and ordinary housing as well as different types of healthcare related housing such as hospices and patient hotels . An important aspect is that the dwelling should be able to provide room for care provision but not intrude too much on the resident's personal integrity. The course deals with how architecture and design can support the processes of housing and care.
