MV From Kazakhstan to Chalmers in the service of mathematics

After almost three decades at Chalmers, Serik Sagitov, head of the Division of Applied Mathematics and Statistics and professor of Mathematical Statistics, is retiring. Raised in Kazakhstan and having completed his doctoral studies in Moscow, he moved permanently to Chalmers University of Technology in 1997.“Looking back, I am very happy that I ended up in Sweden and at Chalmers,” Serik says.

During the summer, several media outlets, including Läkartidningen, have reported that Sahlgrenska University Hospital is initiating trials with 3D printing to reconstruct soft tissues for patients and insert the first implants on humans. The bioink used in the implants originates from research led by Paul Gatenholm, today Professor emeritus at the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering , Chalmers University of Technology.

Astronomers have discovered a vast and expanding bubble of gas and dust surrounding a red supergiant star – the largest structure of its kind ever seen in the Milky Way. The bubble, which contains as much mass as the Sun, was blown out in a mysterious stellar eruption around 4000 years ago. Why the star survived such a powerful event is a puzzle, scientists say.

Jessica Jewell blends technology and social sciences in her research. By studying historical energy transitions, she aims to discover which climate actions have the greatest potential for rapid implementation and impact. In the Verapodden podcast, she discusses economic and political factors that can both slow down and accelerate the transition of society, even though we know fairly well from a scientific perspective what needs to be done to reduce carbon dioxide emissions.
