To lead in that environment, you need deep technical understanding, combined with managerial, organisational, and digital skills. This programme will prepare you to manage complex construction projects, all the way from the early planning stages through to completion.

Programme description
As digital tools and sustainability requirements transform the construction industry, projects are becoming increasingly complex. They have more stakeholders, longer timelines, and stricter requirements than ever. Gothenburg itself is a city in the middle of significant urban transformation, and this programme puts you right at the centre of those changes.
You start by building a foundation across the core disciplines of construction management. This includes areas like construction law, finance, procurement, and coordination across complex projects. In the second year, you deepen your profile, either through the Digital Construction specialisation or through a tailored selection of elective courses.
The education is both theoretical and hands-on. Case studies, project-based work and simulations place you in situations that mirror professional practice, often alongside students from different engineering and architecture backgrounds.
Chalmers has a strong history of collaborations with leading construction and planning companies in Gothenburg and beyond. This will give you ample opportunity to network and benefit from mentorships and thesis collaborations during your studies. There are also opportunities for you to take a study period abroad, allowing you to gain international experience and expand your global network.
The programme draws on active research across construction management, digital construction, sustainability, innovation, and organisational studies. This ensures that what you study reflects both current practice and the future of the field.
Job opportunities
When you graduate, you will be well-positioned for roles that combine technical knowledge with project leadership skills. Early careers typically begin in coordination or engineering support roles before progressing into senior positions in project and design management, and strategic and director-level positions.
Typical employers include major construction and contracting companies such as Skanska, NCC, Peab, or engineering consultancies such as Sweco and Norconsult. More possibilities can be found at property companies, public sector clients and municipalities, or management consulting firms in the built environment. Chalmers also has extensive connections with many major industrial partners in construction and design, as well as public organisations like the Swedish Transport Administration. You will have good opportunities to network and make contacts with these kinds of organisations during your studies.
Swedish construction firms sometimes require some Swedish language skills, and Chalmers offers fee-paying students a free course in Swedish to help you get started with this.
For those interested in research, the programme provides an excellent basis for doctoral studies in construction management, digital construction, and related fields, either at Chalmers or elsewhere.
Research
The programme is anchored in research environments across two departments at Chalmers: Architecture and Civil Engineering, and Technology Management and Economics.
Researchers in these areas are connected to major initiatives including the Digital Twin Cities Centre and Chalmers AI Research Centre, with work spanning digital twins, AI-driven design, legal frameworks, and sustainable construction. Through the Center for the Management of the Built Environment, Chalmers also has extensive connections with many major industrial partners in Gothenburg and Sweden.
Active research areas feeding directly into the programme include project management and organisation, digitalisation and innovation, circular construction, and leadership and inclusion in engineering contexts.
You will engage with this research directly through teaching, industry-linked project courses, and the master's thesis. This can be carried out within a research group at Chalmers, or potentially in collaboration with industry partners.

Prerequisites: 15 cr completed courses within: Building planning, Urban planning, Construction economics and organisation, Building information modelling, Construction law.
