Who pays tuition fees
You must pay tuition fees if
you have been admitted as a citizen of a country outside the EU, EEA or Switzerland, unless an exemption applies.
You do not pay tuition fees if you are:
a citizen of an EU or EEA country or Switzerland
a holder of a permanent Swedish residence permit, or a temporary Swedish residence permit granted for reasons other than studies
an incoming exchange student exempt under the relevant exchange agreement.

If you are newly admitted and believe you qualify for an exemption, contact admissions@chalmers.se before the autumn semester starts and provide supporting documents. Your admission will be revoked if you neither establish an exemption nor pay the tuition fee on time.
Fees and what they include
Programme fees apply to bachelor’s and master’s studies. All amounts below are in Swedish kronor (SEK). The master’s totals cover a two-year programme of four semesters.

Fees are set before each academic year and may differ between programmes.
What programme students receive (from autumn 2023 onwards)
For fee-paying programme students enrolled from autumn 2023 onwards, the tuition fee includes:
one offer of accommodation, excluding rent
one introductory Swedish-language course during the first semester and one introduction to studies at Chalmers
one 3-credit introductory course: Design methodology preparatory course or Preparatory course in Matlab
one 7.5-credit elective course during your studies
one 3-credit elective course during your studies
student union membership for no more than five semesters

For single subject courses, the fee includes the course and student union membership.
Plan for tuition fees throughout your programme as well as living costs. Rent and other costs related to admission or studies are not covered by the tuition fee. Read about living costs and opening a bank account in Sweden.
Opening a bank account
Contact a Swedish bank about opening an account for your time in Sweden. If you have a Swedish personal identity number, provide it; otherwise ask which identification and study documents are accepted. Plan to use cards and bank transfers for everyday payments. Bring only a small amount of cash: cash-deposit limits and checks vary between banks, and large amounts can be difficult to handle. Ask your bank how to transfer funds to your new account.

Pay your tuition fee
Pay the full invoice by its stated deadline. Admission remains conditional until the first tuition fee is paid in full, in one instalment. Programme students pay one semester at a time, before each semester starts; a separate rule applies to employers, companies and foundations.
Find your invoice
Chalmers sends payment information to the email address used in your application. It includes your customer number and a link to the Pay Portal. Log in with your customer number and application number to view invoices, payment instructions and payment status.

Once you receive your Chalmers computer account, change your Pay Portal login to your Chalmers ID (CID) and password under "My customer account".
Choose your payment method
We recommend Visa or Mastercard in the Pay Portal. You can also pay by bank transfer using the instructions there. Read the full payment instructions before paying.
Check your payment status
Check the Pay Portal to see when your invoice is cleared. Read about payment processing times.
If you are waiting for a scholarship
If you need a scholarship to afford your studies, we recommend waiting for the decision before paying. Not receiving a scholarship is not a ground for a tuition fee refund.
You may apply for a payment deadline extension if you are awaiting a domestic scholarship decision. Email tuitionfees@chalmers.se before your invoice deadline and attach your scholarship application. For scholarship questions, contact admissions@chalmers.se.
Pay before applying for a residence permit
Pay your tuition fee before applying for a residence permit for studies. Chalmers notifies the Swedish Migration Agency when payment is complete. Apply promptly after payment; Chalmers cannot guarantee a residence permit decision before the autumn semester.
You are not entitled to a tuition fee refund if you apply for a residence permit for studies after 15 June. Read the refund exclusions before paying and follow the Swedish Migration Agency application and financial requirements.

Payments affected by sanctions
International sanctions and bank rules may affect payments and refunds. Chalmers uses the bank - Nordea. Nordea generally does not process transactions connected with certain countries and regions, including Belarus, Iran, North Korea and Russia. If this may affect you, contact tuitionfees@chalmers.se before accepting your offer or paying. Read Nordea’s sanctions policy.
