The Marine Technology Laboratory (MTL) is a small-scale infrastructure designed for use in both educational and research purposes. It is a facility with a water tank, which is able for testing of marine structures in water. Here, students as well as researchers have the possibility to visualize and measure phenomena with floating objects in waves.
The MTL offers a 5-meter length water tank, suitable for Chalmers’ education programs that have courses that may benefit from experimental testing as part of the examination and learning goals. In the laboratory teachers can show students motions of ships and offshore structures in waves, as well as the stability of ships.
As a researcher, one can study wave response of floating structures, erosion from waves or floating structures such as wind turbines or ageing of materials in water.
The MTL provides a research and testing infrastructure for, for example:
• Undergraduate students who want to make empricial studies
• Thesis projects involving waves, water motions, floating or submerged objects
• PhD students who want to design and test marine structures
• Chalmers OCEAN projects
The MTL provides:
- The wave trough; a wave tank for long crested deep-water waves
- Motion capture system for tracking moving objects
- Experimental models and 3D printer for prototype manufacturing
