An idealized rendering of the real-time depth-resolved imaging (only an imagined single projection shown) and image cross section of fibre-composite material. The alignment and positioning of fibres and voids due to imperfect wetting by resin determines the mechanical properties, which may predicted by finite element modelling (lowest slice) based on the microstructural parameters.
