”A Study on Single Tree Modeling for Wind-Induced Fluid-Structure Interaction : Exploring the Level of Detail for Tree Representation”
Abstract: Trees and green spaces are vital for sustainable urban living, yet tools to guide optimal tree placement and assess wind-related risks remain limited. This study presents a numerical modeling framework for simulating wind-induced fluid-structure interaction (FSI) on a single tree. Three tree models of increasing level of detail (LoD) are developed, and detailed FEM and CFD parameter studies are conducted to identify key mechanical and aerodynamic properties. A single-object mesh is used in both solvers, with stem and crown regions differentiated by field-assigned material and permeability properties. The immersed boundary method (IBM) is employed to capture tree motion within the CFD solver. The study evaluates the feasibility of the single-object approach used in FEM and CFD solvers. Results from the study can offer guidance for wind-tree interaction modeling in urban environments.

<h4>Utveckling av en säkerhetsfokuserad domkraft</h4>
Sammanfattning: Syftet med detta projekt är att utveckla en säker och effektiv domkraft som minskar risken för personskador och skador på fordon. Det slutgiltiga konceptet har utformats för att uppfylla aktuella standarder och klara realistiska laster, vilket har verifierats genom hållfasthetsberäkningar och FEM-simuleringar. Utvecklingen har fokuserat på att använda en anpassad lyftrörelse. Istället för en traditionell lyftmekanism som roterar bakåt, ifrån bilen, används i det nya designförslaget en styrd framåtriktad rörelse, vilket förbättrar stabiliteten och minskar risken för att domkraften ska glida eller tippa under användning. En målsatt lyftkraft på 15 kN, motsvarande att lyfta två hjul på en vanlig personbil, valdes för att säkerställa både säkerhet och konkurrenskraft gentemot befintliga produkter. Denna manuellt manövrerade och mobila domkraft fyller en unik roll på marknaden, särskilt som ett alternativ till hydrauliska domkrafter som inte kan låsas säkert under belastning. Den framåtriktade lyftbanan är den centrala innovationen och erbjuder en mer stabil och säker lyftprocess.
Flera designiterationer gjordes, modellerades i CAD och testades virtuellt för att utvärdera hur krafterna fördelades i konstruktionen. Baserat på dessa resultat justerades varje komponent för att uppfylla både funktionella krav och hållfasthetskrav. Lämpliga maskinelement såsom bultar, skruvar och bussningar valdes ut och verifierades. Den slutliga konstruktionen inkluderar även ett mekaniskt höjdlås och en grundläggande låsfunktion mot marken med låsbara hjul för att säkra domkraften vid användning. Projektet har även visat hur förändringar i tidiga designfaser påverkar senare beräkningar och simuleringar i hög grad. Även om konstruktionen uppfyller samtliga huvudkrav föreslås fortsatt utveckling, särskilt fysisk testning för att undersöka de horisontella krafter som kan uppstå under lyft. Detta skulle bidra till att validera konceptet under verkliga förhållanden och vägleda framtida förbättringar.

"Circularity in Product Development – a case at SKF"
Abstract: As we are facing environmental challenges globally, the traditional take-make-disposal&nbsp;liner model is no longer sustainable and we must evolve. Circular economy, driven&nbsp;by product life extension, reuse, remanufacture, recycle, etc., is recognized as a&nbsp;sustainable economic system and has been an area of research to develop frameworks,&nbsp;methods and tools to support organizations in making the shift. SKF, a&nbsp;Swedish company which has a high vision of sustainability, has initiated a Circularity&nbsp;Program and determined to implement circular product development within the&nbsp;organization. Therefore, a master thesis project was kicked off to explore collaborative&nbsp;approaches to implement circularity in product development. Backcasting&nbsp;approaches was taken in the project to set up goals, identify gaps between the future&nbsp;and the present, and define key initiatives for the organization to make future&nbsp;planning. The project aims to customize a methodology with references from the&nbsp;state of art, to implement circularity in product development at the case company.&nbsp;Meanwhile, the project outcome could also inspire the future research in the area of&nbsp;circular product development.

”Optimizing the effect of tramp elements on Intermetallic phases in HPDC Al alloys – A Thermodynamic approach”
Abstract: The growing interest in increasing recycled content in aluminium for high-pressure die casting (HPDC) is driven by a demand for greater sustainability, as recycled content offers a∼95% reduction in energy in comparison to primary aluminium. However, elevated levels of elemental contamination from recycled content, mainly tramp elements such iron (Fe) and manganese (Mn) pose significant challenges. This thesis focuses on the thermodynamic analysis of the Al-Si-Fe-Mn system with additions of magnesium (Mg) by applying Thermo-Calc through CALPHAD-based Scheil simulations at high cooling rates (100 K/s), in conjunction with validation using complementary microstructure analysis.
The simulations comprised of over 300 compositions, showed that increasing Fe content strongly correlates with a linear increase in β-Al5FeSi phase fraction. In contrast, increasing Mn content suppresses β phase formation by promoting the more benign α-Al15(MnFe)3Si2 phase. Silicon, on the other hand was found to have significant impact on the system’s solidification range and eutectic reactions, while increased Mg content introduced competition between the π-AlFeMgSi and β phases. Simulations indicated that Mg evaporation can influence the phase equilibria, increasing β phase fractions, thus accentuating the importance of precise compositional control.
Microstructure analysis, employing SEM and EDS on the cast alloys, confirms the trends observed in simulations while also highlighting composition differences for the kinetic factors such as δ-AlFeSi phase formation and localized solute depletion zones around α phase particles. This work findings emphasize the predictive strength of computational thermodynamic simulations as a tool, while underscoring the importance of integration of kinetic effects to contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of optimizing recycled aluminium alloys.

”Machinability of Duplex and Super Duplex Stainless Steels: A comparison between different cutting tools”
Abstract: This master thesis aims at investigating machinability of Duplex and Super Duplex Stainless Steels from tool wear perspective, assessing factors as cutting forces, chip and wear formation. To investigate it, two types of tests were used: orthogonal and longitudinal under constant spiral cutting length of 875 meters. In orthogonal cutting tests, acquired force measurements, contact lengths and chip thicknesses were correlated to chip shape. For longitudinal tests the forces and wear patterns were correlated between each other and the cutting tools. The wear formation was investigated using stereo optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy. Orthogonal testing showed correlation between average forces, chip thickness and tool-chip contact length. Significant differences in tool-chip contact length between grades 2220 and 2025 were observed. Overall Super Duplex Stainless Steel machining resulted in higher average cutting forces and their variation, lower average chip thickness with lower variation and lower contact length. Regarding the cutting tool wear, there is a noticeable variation in type and size of wear for different grades. The most frequently occurring wear types were: notch wear, built-up-edge formation and crater wear. There is also a difference between wear formation for Duplex and Super Duplex Stainless steel, where both size and localization varied, while types of wear remained similar. Among the cutting tool grades 1205 had the lowest wear and cutting forces, suggesting future usage of superalloy intended tools for these materials. The overall flank wear was higher for Super Duplex Stainless Steel, which is likely caused by its lower thermal conductivity and higher hardness.

"Future System for High-pressure Fuel Leakage Detection in Marine Commercial Engines"
Abstract: The project explores the development of novel double-jacketed high-pressure fuel delivery pipes used in marine commercial engines. Current Double-jacketed pipes meet the safety standard, but suffer from high cost, high manufacturing difficulty and poor tolerances. These double-jacketed pipes tend to distort and leak from the outer pipe due to poor tolerances. &nbsp; &nbsp;The aim of the project was to offer the industry a superior alternative to those already in use, with the intent of enhancing the manufacturability of the components, reducing costs, and improving tolerances. The project was driven towards developing a robust leak detection and containment mechanisms to mitigate hazards such as fuel spray or contamination in the engine room. It also investigates on potential suppliers for procuring the materials and components for the system. It also aims to propose recommendations for future systems.
The project was conducted using a stage gate product development process. Initially, an analysis of existing systems and Volvo Penta marine engines was performed, followed by a review of the regulations applicable to current engines, as these regulations played a major role in the concept development. The final design was validated through Finite Element Analysis (FEA) while cost calculations were performed and material alternatives were explored.
