”Boundary Objects for Integrating Maintenance into Strategic Procurement of Battery Production Equipment - A Case Study of Northvolt AB”
Abstract: This master’s thesis investigates how maintenance considerations can be effectively integrated into the strategic procurement of battery production equipment, with a focus on Northvolt, a leading battery manufacturer in Sweden. As the battery industry grows rapidly to meet the increasing demand for electrification, ensuring robust procurement and maintenance processes becomes critical for operational efficiency and sustainability. The study addresses three primary research questions: mapping the procurement process and its associated challenges and mitigation strategies, identifying critical maintenance-related challenges, and developing practical solutions to bridge procurement and maintenance functions. An abductive research approach was adopted, combining semi-structured interviews with a case study of Northvolt, supported by a literature review of strategic procurement, maintenance, and organizational coordination. This methodological design enabled iterative improvements between empirical insights and theoretical understanding throughout the study. Key findings identify procurement and maintenance challenges such as supplier dependency, departmental misalignment, and documentation gaps. In response, five interventions are conceptualized as boundary objects: human intermediaries, cross-functional RFQ frameworks, FAT/SAT procedures, structured workshops, and Expert Regional Supplier-Specific Teams (ERSSTs), each designed to strengthen coordination and improve long-term equipment performance. Together, these form a system of boundary objects intended to support the early and systematic integration of maintenance considerations into the strategic procurement process. Beyond addressing firm-specific issues, this contribution offers practical insights for other industrial actors seeking to improve cross-functional collaboration and equipment lifecycle outcomes in complex manufacturing environments.

"Outsourcing Electrode Manufacturing: A Technical and Economic Evaluation"
Abstract: The demand for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) has been continuing to grow, and that is the reason why battery manufacturers like NOVO Energy face a strategic decision: whether to continue producing electrodes in-house or to outsource their production. This thesis investigated the decision by exploring both the technical and economic implications of outsourcing electrode manufacturing in the context of LIB production. The study used academic literature and expert interviews to assess four strategic scenarios: fully In-house production, fully Outsourcing, Gradual Vertical Integration, and Parallel Make-and-Buy. Each scenario was analyzed through the lens of key industry factors like cost efficiency, scalability, quality control, and intellectual property protection. Outsourcing can offer short-term benefits like lower initial investment and possibly faster ramp-up, but it also has drawbacks related to long-term control over processes and maintaining the product quality consistency. On the other hand, &nbsp;keeping production in-house brings tighter integration and long-term competitiveness but needs more upfront resources and causes higher early-stage risk. The thesis suggested a staged approach that combines Gradual Vertical Integration and Parallel Make-and-Buy based on the findings. By starting with external suppliers for the electrodes and then transitioning to in-house production over time, NOVO Energy can manage risks and costs while aiming towards a controlled and scalable production model.

"Investigating Project and Asset Management Integration - Ensuring Reliable Handovers in Production Projects"
Abstract: Efficient management of resources, ensuring reliable operations has become increasingly important. A critical aspect of achieving this is the transition from project development to implementation. Challenges often arise during the handover due to unclear processes, missing information, and inadequate planning, leading to inefficiencies. This thesis analyses project structures, and responsibilities. Identifying problem areas in the different project phases, the thesis aims to find ways to ensure operational reliability and effective data management. The goal is to find critical areas in the project process that hinder production and operation &amp; maintenance from managing the production equipment over its life cycle. The thesis addresses key challenges in the handover of production projects concerning project management and asset management integration and investigates solutions that can be implemented. The methodology includes a literature study, a case study, and a process study. The case study involves analyses of documented processes and structures, alongside interviews. The process study supports the findings by following an ongoing project and gathering information through documentation analysis and observations. The analyses identified several areas of improvement and challenges concerning project handover. These include the necessity of clear roles and responsibilities. Setting higher standards by the steering committee, and oversee the prioritizations are also necessary, alongside continuously reviewing ongoing and previous projects. Involvement of the receiving organizations in project orders were identified as important, together with detailed handover requirements to reach satisfaction from both parties. Establishing a standard for project documentation were also identified as necessary, alongside ensuring effective and reliable communication channels.

Abstract: This study investigates the possibility and implications of combining smart maintenance and Total productive maintenance (TPM ) in a factory that works with TPM. The study is conducted at Volvo trucks factory in Tuve. The main objective is to create two roadmaps that combines both strategies. The first road map will be tailored to academia with the precondition of maturity in TPM. The second road map will be tailored to the needs of Volvo Tuve.
Through rigorous work with interviews and thematic coding a current state analysis is presented. This shows the level of maturity Volvo have reached in TPM. Combined with the investigation of the two concepts which gave the gap between TPM-Smart maintenance. The investigation gave the necessary information to create the roadmaps that has the potential to raise equipment reliability, reduce costs, and strengthen the competitive advantage.

”The role of maintenance towards circular economy”
Abstract: The manufacturing industry is a major contributor to global greenhouse gas emissions, yet it also holds vast potential for sustainability transitions. As circular economy (CE) principles gain traction, integrating them into established industrial frameworks presents a persistent challenge especially within Company-Specific Production Systems (XPS) and its core pillars such as Professional Maintenance (PM) which are traditionally cost-driven and exclude social and environmental perspectives of sustainability. This thesis investigates how PM can evolve into a strategic enabler of sustainability by embedding CE indicators. Initially, a systematic literature review (SLR) was conducted which identified 23 CE indicators at the micro and nano levels of manufacturing as well as common barriers and enablers to their deployment. These indicators were assessed for their measurability, data requirements, and strategic fit within PM through a structured questionnaire and semi-structured interviews with professionals across a Swedish manufacturing company. The results showed that operational data was widely adopted at the sites, while energy, environmental and material data was significantly less adopted and more challenging for PM. Based on these insights, a parallel framework was developed that aligns the CE indicators with the existing PM maturity model. Together they capture both cost-efficiency and CE, by mapping indicators to maturity levels where data availability and implementation feasibility converge. Having created the framework, key deployment considerations were identified in the literature and case study and then mapped against the appropriate levels in the framework. The study shows how management support and cultural readiness is important to consider initially, while more external perspectives, such as ESG reporting and supply chain collaborations are crucial towards higher maturity levels. This thesis identifies CE Indicators suitable for PM, creates a CE-integrated maturity model and identifies deployment considerations. By doing so it provides an academically based, yet grounded in industry, way of integrating the CE perspective into PM.

”The Power of WHY – the Key to Excellence - Why Understanding WHY Leads to Enhanced Customer Satisfaction and Cross-Functional Integration in the Initial Phases of Product Development”
Abstract:&nbsp; To do the right things from start and do it all the time might sound like an apparent statement, however, it is easier said than done. The prerequisite, as this dissertation will show, to do the right things from and do it all the time is to thoroughly understand what, how to do and most essentially, why do what you do. This MSc dissertation investigates how a deeper understanding of the underlying why behind customer expectations can enhance value creation and customer satisfaction within product development processes. Using Aurobay as a case study and utilising the highly data-driven and fact-based improvement methodology, Six Sigma, the research explores the current state of the quotation process and its impact on business operations, the influence of expectation alignment on perceived quality, and potential methods for bridging the gap between current and future states. The findings indicate that while existing processes are standardised, they lack sufficient focus on identifying the root drivers of customer value. This limitation leads to misaligned value propositions, increased rework, and reduced customer satisfaction. To address this, a method was developed, grounded in Sinek’s Golden Circle and the Value Definition Model, to support early-stage identification and prioritization of customer expectations. The proposed approach promotes cross-functional collaboration and encourages a shift from task-driven to needs-driven thinking. The author proposes a novel quality definition. The definition is based on the premise that quality should be assessed not solely by measurable attributes, but by the extent to which a product or service meets or exceeds customer expectations. As such, a product may be perceived as superior in quality even if it is objectively outperformed by alternatives, provided it delivers greater alignment with user expectations. This perspective underscores the importance of perception and expectation management. Ultimately, the thesis highlights the importance of understanding not just what and how to deliver, but why—providing strategic insights for improving customer alignment and value delivery in complex development environments.&nbsp;

"Development of an integrated FEA solution for shipbuilding -Streamlining Compliance with Classification Society Standards"
Abstract:&nbsp; This thesis presents a Python-driven, MSC Apex–integrated software that automates load-application in alignment with rules specified by the classification societies. The software applies bending, shear, torsion, and pressures directly from spreadsheet inputs onto the finite element model. Utilizing an iterative software development process, the solution was systematically built and validated against external benchmarks on oil tanker midship models. The developed software delivers accurate, repeatable results while eliminating manual data transfers and significantly reduce the amount of different interfaces used throughout the finite element analysis. Its modular architecture easily adapts to other vessel types and rule sets and is designed for seamless future integration into Design-For-Compliance (DFC), paving the way for faster, more transparent structural compliance analyses.

"Attaining Organizational Alignment Between Top-Down Directives and Shop Floor Initiatives"
Abstract: To achieve company goals, the top strategies should align with shop floor activities. In a large global organization, it is hard to align thousands of people to get them to act in accordance with the same values and goals. This study investigated the main hinders and enablers by conducting a case study at a manufacturing plant of a global company. The methods included analyzing key performance indicators, behaviors, and point of view of employees at all levels of the plant organization. This study unveiled cultural clashes in an ongoing leadership shift that has led to a misalignment of expectations and inconsistencies of the way of working. There exist several best practices in the plant that are in accordance with existing research within cultural change and innovation, but to spread them and get the changes to stick, the organization must be aligned.

"Circular Economy: Design for Recycling and Data Exchange for Plastic Packaging"
Abstract: Circular economy is becoming a key way of addressing use of limited resources and environmental impact, but currently the use of plastic packaging is far from circular. One of the challenges that hinder a circular flow of plastic for packaging is that the packaging is not always developed to work with existing recycling infrastructure. Semi-structured interviews were conducted 19 companies that produce and sell products with plastic packaging (product producers), and 11 complementary interviews were conducted to cover a larger part of the value chain. Together with a literature review of recent scientific findings and policy documents, the interviews were used to fulfil the aim of analysing the state-of-the-art and current data exchange practices of the plastic packaging value chain. With the recently introduced EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), the industry has an increasing focus in Design for Recycling (DfR). The main tool that product producers use for DfR today is DfR guidelines, but the study show that these can diverge in their assessments of products. The industry currently only have a small focus on traceability, but the PPWR will bring more focus to this as requirements for ensuring recycling at scale comes into affect. Increased data exchange in the industry has the potential to improve circularity.

"Identification of User Needs in Visualisation Tools"
Abstract: The fast-paced environment in the automotive industry is putting pressure on companies to quickly respond to change. It becomes more and more important to have effective tools and computer systems that can support everything from design to testing and documentation. Volvo Cars is in the process of changing their Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) system used by Research and Development, a change that will affect thousands of employees. Included in the PLM system is a 3D visualisation tool that is widely used throughout the organisation. This visualisation tool will therefore also be replaced with a new tool. To make the transition as smooth as possible, the visualisation-related needs, as well as the ways of working throughout the organisation, must be understood.&nbsp;
This study has explored the needs experienced by employees in various roles and work areas in relation to product visualisation. Through 17 semi-formal interviews, insight was gained into processes, current issues, and potential areas of improvement. A comprehensive user need list has been created to summarise the identified needs across all roles. In addition, some more general findings related to limited knowledge about the tool used today, instances where the same tasks are performed in multiple teams, and what employees expect when it comes to intuitiveness are presented. Recommendations have been formulated regarding the education of employees and how the company can work more effectively, for example, by limiting double work and thereby saving both time and resources. This could help to support the implementation of the new tool. &nbsp;

"CAE Modeling of HPDC Aluminum"
Abstract: This thesis seeks to improve correlation between physical testing results and simulations for a HPDC aluminum component loaded beyond failure. Empirical data was gathered through a three-point bending test of cast beams and further validated with tensile tests using coupons from the same casting component. Explicit time-stepping simulations were carried out using LS-DYNA and failure models GISSMO and CrachFEM were used for solid and shell elements. Underwhelming physical test results led to a focus on incorporating porosity into the model, both through pore meshing and scaling on different levels. Scaling was justified with representative volume elements. Quantitative improvements were made, significantly reducing error. Two different macro-mapping methods reduced error both in peak force, displacement at failure and absorbed energy. Error relative to average test observations was reduced from 66.2%(force), 25.0%(displacement) and 77.3% (energy) to 7.70% &amp; 7.74% (force), 12.5% &amp; 31.28%(displacement) and 12.5% &amp; 46.97% (energy).
Additionally, time for meshing with hexahedral elements was reduced from one week to mere minutes, while maintaining accuracy comparable to tetra elements. This method shows promise for reducing shear locking. The study found no major differences between first and second order solid elements for both tetrahedral and hexahedral meshes other than computational cost. The micro-mapping methodology developed in this investigation using CT-scan data and casting process simulation data proved insufficient in accounting for the disparities between empirical data and simulation results and needs further development. The thesis also explores the potential of Isogeometric Analysis (IGA) as a future method, noting its current limitations and immaturity for practical application.
Furthermore, the study investigated alloys with varying degree of impurities, imitating the use of recycled material, to determine if there were any significant differences between them. However, no clear differences were observed, which may be attributed to larger sources of error overshadowing the potential variations between the alloys.

Abstract: The transition to electric vehicles (EVs) is rapidly accelerating in Europe due to the climate targets and growing demand for sustainable transformation. The rise in EV adoption is increasing the number of batteries reaching end-of-life (EoL), which causes various challenges such as inefficiencies, waste, and safety risks. These issues result from a lack of alignment across the value chain. This study aims to address misalignment by investigating three research questions: (1) identifying the state-of-art of EoL processes and the its challenges associated with product and data problems, (2) exploring tools and mechanisms enabling data exchange to mitigate these problems, and (3) demonstrating how Battery-asa- service (BaaS) business model can incentivize data sharing through the identified tools and mechanisms. The study applies various qualitative methods, including a systematic literature review, semi-structured interviews with industry experts, and workshops to collect the data. The findings show that the main barriers to effective EoL management stem from uncircular product designs and limited data transparency across the value chain. Several tools and mechanisms for enhancing data transparency were identified and evaluated using the SWOT framework. The BaaS model was examined through the Business Model Canvas and System Dynamics (SD) modelling, which helped visualize incentive structures for circular designs and collaborations. Future research should acknowledge that these results are based on the current industry, which is subject to change due to high industry uncertainties and fast-paced developments. Engaging a more diverse group of stakeholders from diverse regions could also strengthen validity of findings. Moreover, key elements of the BaaS model require in-depth analysis to determine their viability and feasibility in different market environments at scale. Finally, quantifying and contextualizing the SD model can provide a strong basis for strategic decision-making.

”From Manual to Robotic Disassembly: Adhesive Lid Removal in EV Battery Packs”
Abstract: The increasing need for efficient and safe disassembly of electric vehicle (EV) batteries has made robot automation an important focus. This thesis explores solutions of a robotic end-effector for the removal of adhesive-bonded EV battery lids, with the aim of supporting future automated recycling systems. The work is based on interviews with industry professionals, literature, and patent reviews, as well as a structured design evaluation process. Key requirements identified for automation included robustness to battery design variation, safe operation near cells, and acceptable process speed. A possible concept was evaluated: a vertically mounted shoulder mill that uses a semi-destructive approach to cut along adhesive paths without risking cell damage. While no physical testing was performed, the concept was assessed using CAD models and process calculations. For the Tesla Model S lid geometry, an estimated process time of approximately 6 minutes was calculated, with a total cutting force around 560 N at a feed per tooth of 0.08 mm. These results suggest that the tool could offer similar or better performance compared to current manual methods, while also being safer and easier to automate. Future work should include experimental validation using a robotic system, focusing on cutting performance, vibration effects, and toolpath stability.

”Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of Mining Waste Facility (MWF) Operations: A Case Study of Reprocessing Iron Tailings in Sweden”
Abstract:&nbsp; Historical tailings, once considered waste due to technological limitations, are now increasingly recognized as potential secondary sources of valuable materials. This study applies an ex-ante and prospective Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) to evaluate the environmental impacts of reprocessing historical iron tailings located in central Sweden, under both current technologies and projected future scenarios. The tailings are characterized by a high content of apatite, along with iron (Fe) and rare earth elements (REEs) such as monazite, which present opportunities for recovery as secondary resources. Given that apatite is the primary mineral source of phosphorus in the form of P2O5, a critical nutrient for agriculture and food production, this study focuses on apatite recovery. The results provide a comprehensive assessment of the environmental implications of such recovery processes, offering valuable insights to support circular economy strategies aimed at extending material life cycles through the reuse of mining residues.

"Electrochemical-Mechanical Modelling of Lithium-ion Batteries"
Abstract: As the global adoption of electric vehicle (EV) technology accelerates, the demand&nbsp;for safe, sustainable, and reliable battery technologies has increased. Currently,&nbsp;lithium-ion batteries are the most promising option due to their high energy density and long cycle life. However, a significant concern with lithium-ion batteries is their tendency to swell during operation. This swelling is not just a cosmetic issue; it can seriously impact the battery’s efficiency and safety. When battery cells swell, they may experience a reduction in energy storage capacity, which affects the overall performance&nbsp;of the vehicle. Additionally, this expansion can lead to mechanical failures or even pose fire hazards if not properly managed. Since the effects of swelling are quasi-static in nature, physically testing the batteries can be both expensive and&nbsp;time-consuming. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop virtual testing models&nbsp;to analyze the mechanical response of battery cells while considering the effects&nbsp;of swelling. This study aimed to develop a methodology for predicting the mechanical&nbsp;response of battery cells by integrating the effects of state of charge-induced&nbsp;swelling using a coupled electrochemical-mechanical simulations. &nbsp; This study builds on the previous work and research done in the Battery Structural &amp; Thermal Simulation department at Volvo cars. A multiscale modeling approachis utilized in this work to analyze the battery at micro, meso, and macro scale levels. At the microscale, the mechanical response to particle-level expansion was examined, and an effective swelling coefficient was determined through virtual tests. This effective swelling coefficient was then scaled up to the mesoscale, where coupled electrochemical and mechanical simulations were conducted to assess the impact of lithium insertion on the expansion at the electrode level. Finally, this effective expansion was further upscaled to capture the volume changes occurring at the cell level. The developed methodology in this work can be further utilized to analyze the pack or module level swelling. &nbsp; A key limitation of the developed framework is that it only accounts for swelling&nbsp;induced by change in the state of charge. Consequently, additional work is needed to&nbsp;enhance the model by incorporating swelling caused by lithium plating, degradation&nbsp;of the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer, and gas generation. These factors&nbsp;have a significant impact on the cell’s response and require further investigation.

”Tolerance Simulation Optimization with Data Analysis”
Abstract: This thesis mainly focuses on simulation chain accuracy through data driven optimization techniques within the BIW Assembly. Geometry assurance plays an important role in maintaining product quality throughout lifecycle by managing the deviations originate from manufacturing and assembly processes. In complex assembly scenarios especially within BIW Assembly, involving mixed materials and varying structural rigidity, the simulation accuracy becomes challenging wanting a deeper understanding of existing models. The primary objective is to refine the simulation models that predict geometric variations to enhance the predictive capability. To achieve the objective, detailed correlation study has been conducted analyzing and comparing the real-world production data with rigid and non-rigid simulation models assessing the effects like process adjustments.
The comparison study between the production data and tolerance simulation model data is used to derive root cause analysis within each sub assembly. Based on this study, improvements done within existing simulation models and suggested the optimized simulation guidelines. This research aspires to find the major contributors for the geometrical variations within BIW Upper body assembly and also bridge the gap between simulation models and real-world data, improving the robustness within the rigid body simulation.

”Circularity Readiness Assessment of Product Value Chain in the Aerospace Industry”
Abstract: This thesis presents the development of a circularity readiness assessment tool tailored to the value chain of the aerospace industry. The tool, named ENGREEN CRA, helps companies identify gaps, assess improvement areas, and promote collaboration across the value chain. "Circularity readiness of the value chain" is defined as the psychological and structural preparedness of a company’s value chain to adopt circular economy principles. A comprehensive review of 30 existing tools led to the identification of eight critical areas that shaped the framework, with a focus on scope, interface, and objectives. Furthermore, two essential dimensions: “Regulatory &amp; Compliance Readiness” and “Performance Measurement" were recognised through an analysis of the context in one of the case companies.
The tool underwent validation through expert interviews and was tested in two case companies: GKN Aerospace and SAAB AB. This test included individual and group assessments, revealing insights on the usability and effectiveness of the tool in supporting organisational reflection. The tool enables internal evaluations without requiring sensitive data and can be used to map readiness between value chain partners.

”Development of a Lightweight Fixed-Wing Drone for Early Situational Awareness in Critical Applications”
Abstract: This thesis explores the development of a lightweight, sub-250 g fixed-wing drone intended for early situational awareness in emergency response scenarios. Conducted in collaboration with Remote.aero and the Swedish Sea Rescue Society, the work focuses on concept development, aerodynamic optimization, prototyping and validation through flight testing. An extensive benchmarking study identified key design parameters and trade-offs for tailless UAVs. Utilizing XFLR5 aerodynamic simulations, the study optimized critical design variables, notably aspect ratio, taper ratio and wing span, to maximize the lift-to-drag ratio within the intended flight envelope. Two prototypes were constructed using 3D printing, confirming theoretical predictions and demonstrating competitive performance during flight tests. The final prototype achieved a stall speed below 8 m/s, a maximum estimated endurance of approximately 43 minutes at loiter speed of 10 m/s, and a maximum estimated range of 55 km at a cruise speed of 25 m/s. The maximum lift-to-drag ratio was 16, at a loiter speed of 11 m/s. Its low intrinsic ground risk classification (iGRC 1) under current regulations simplifies deployment in both urban and rural settings, allowing it to compete with heavier systems while offering critical regulatory advantages. However, flight testing revealed that the reduced mass of the drone makes it sensitive to wind gusts, limiting reliable flight at wind speeds exceeding approximately 10 m/s unless additional airspeed margins are maintained. Ultimately, the design met all other requirements and could carry out a typical mission profile with ease, fulfilling the project’s objectives.

"Abaqus Based Modelling of Ball Bearings"
Abstract: This thesis investigates whether deep groove ball bearings can be accurately modeled in Abaqus replacing rolling elements with non-linear springs. The main focus is on the transfer of radial, axial, and combined loads. Existing analytical stiffness models, such as those by Harris and Hamrock, were found inadequate for general use, prompting the development of a new stiffness model. This was achieved through a curve-fitting approach that correlates bearing geometry (e.g., ball diameter, pitch diameter, number of balls, radial play) with displacement data from reference simulations derived using the commercial gearbox software SABR. The final model achieved an error margin of less than 5% for most load cases and misalignments. The outcome suggests this method provides a flexible and accurate tool for simulating bearing stiffness, with potential for broader implementation and further refinement.
