Summary
Energy is one of the most essential elements of the transition to a more sustainable society. Investigate how we generate, store, and use energy, looking at renewables as well as bridging technologies like carbon capture and storage. Through modelling, optimisation, and engineering analysis, you will be able to design and analyse complex energy systems that balance efficiency with cost, helping lead the way to a sustainable energy future.
Specialisations
Programme description
Energy systems require expertise from many disciplines, you will draw on mechanical, chemical, electrical, and environmental engineering depending on what the problem demands.
The programme begins with a shared foundation in energy conversion, system integration, and thermodynamics, establishing a common platform before opening up into more specialised areas. You will learn to work with a range of analytical tools, from process simulation and fluid flow modelling to energy systems optimisation. You will also gain expertise in advanced energy technologies and systems, with a focus on stationary energy systems encompassing the conversion, distribution, and use of energy while also considering links to the transportation sector. The technical aspects are always placed in their broader social context: global energy challenges, sustainable development, policy frameworks, and the economics of energy decisions are all part of the picture from day one.
Project-based learning and problem-focused courses place you in the middle of real engineering challenges. You will collaborate with students from other programmes on questions drawn from active research. Topics range from carbon capture and storage to flexibility in the electricity system, with specific courses updated regularly to reflect where the field is moving.
Lecturers and professors on the programme are active researchers in their areas, and you will regularly encounter up-to-the-minute research directly through your coursework. You will also have excellent opportunities to carry out your master's thesis in collaboration with industry partners like Volvo or industrial tech firm Valmet, or within research groups. You will graduate with expertise that is both broad and in-depth, allowing you to contribute to many different aspects of the ongoing energy transition.
Job opportunities
You will be well-positioned for roles across the full spectrum of a jobs market in which energy engineering expertise is in high demand. Career paths could include designing next-generation energy systems and renewable energy infrastructure, improving energy efficiency in industrial processes and power plants, assessing and reducing the environmental impact of energy systems, or contributing to energy security in a world of increasing geopolitical instability. Employers span the energy sector, process and manufacturing industries, transportation, and the public sector, where technical expertise in energy is more needed than ever. Chalmers’ strong links with regional and international firms in many relevant industries, like Siemens Energi, Stena, and Vattenfall, will give you excellent opportunities to make early contacts in your career, and the programme also provides an excellent stepping stone to doctoral studies at Chalmers or elsewhere.
Research
Chalmers’ largest research frameworks are called “Areas of Advance”, and one of them is dedicated entirely to energy. Research that feeds into the programme spans energy in a circular economy, energy in the construction sector, technology governance in energy transitions, and electricity for societal development.
You will also study under researchers and external partners who are active in several of Chalmers’ competence centres, covering areas like chemical process engineering, electricity storage, electromobility, wind power, hydrogen, and life cycle assessment. The teaching staff are involved in multiple active collaborations with companies like electric power utilities, energy service providers, chemical industrial firms, equipment manufacturers, and more, and these connections shape what gets taught and what problems you will work on. If you are interested in doctoral studies, the programme provides an excellent foundation for research at Chalmers or elsewhere.
