With just under 400 employees, the Department of Physics and Astronomy is one of the largest departments at Chalmers University of Technology, and one of the largest in Sweden within its field. We are located in a stimulating and creative environment on the Johanneberg Campus in Gothenburg, as well as on the scenic Onsala Peninsula just outside Kungsbacka.
The department was formed on 1 April 2026 through a merger of the former Department of Physics and the divisions of Astronomy and Plasma Physics, along with the Onsala Space Observatory, from the former Department of Space, Earth and Environment.
