World in progress

Chalmers’ vision is to become a world-leading technical university. We aim to take greater responsibility for societal development – through education, research, and innovation. Our vision is founded on the belief that knowledge changes the world. We call it World in progress.

The world is complex and uncertain. Antibiotic-resistant bacteria threaten to make routine surgery deadly again. Technology is taking leaps we can barely comprehend. Geopolitical tensions show us that Europe must be able to stand on its own. But the world is not done. It’s in progress.

That’s what Chalmers intends to do – make the world progress. And we know that no world-changing discoveries happen on well-trodden paths. So we're raising our ambitions. We will lead, go where no one has gone before. That's how progress is made.

Progress is made when research connects with markets. Like when doctoral students become entrepreneurs: then wounds can soon heal faster and safer, with electrical impulses and hydrogel that mimics the body's own immune system. Without antibiotics.

Progress is made when you invest in the unknown. As our foundation status allows us to do, through independence and our own resources. We invest in quantum technology, which can revolutionize the development of pharmaceuticals, energy, and encryption. We research new materials, which might not work or might change everything. In fusion energy – still a dream, but holds the promise of infinite power.

Progress is made when knowledge is shared. Like participating at the World Economic Forum, where we show how science becomes solutions and learn from others' innovations. Or in test labs, where academia and industry work together. From idea to development to validation to prototype in less time than ever before.

Above all, progress is made by people who read "The world is complex and uncertain" and become curious. People who understand that the future doesn't wait for perfect conditions, but that the conditions are created by those who dare to begin. We've attracted record numbers. Students, researchers, and lecturers seek us out from all over the world. Curiosity becomes competitiveness. Research becomes companies. Breakthroughs become societal impact.

But we need even more. More who invest and donate before the results are in. More who see potential where others see risk.

The world is not done. It's shaped by those who step forward.

“A journey no other Swedish university has made”

At the very top of the international university rankings, Swedish higher education institutions are conspicuously absent. In fact, a number of comparable European universities perform significantly better. Chalmers has decided to make use of its particular conditions in an effort to change this situation.
