A new “Hasselblad camera” opens a window to the universe

A major investment in cutting-edge technology is about to transform astronomical observation at Onsala. Thanks to a SEK 13 million grant from the Hasselblad Foundation, Chalmers is developing a new, world-leading camera for the 20-metre telescope at Onsala Space Observatory.

This advanced three-band camera will enable researchers to capture unprecedented, high-resolution, multi-colour images of black holes and other extraordinary phenomena in deep space—bringing us closer than ever to understanding the universe.

Meet Professor John Conway, Professor of Radio Astronomy and Director of Onsala Space Observatory, as he shares how this unique instrument will push the boundaries of space research. He will also provide a broader perspective on Onsala’s role in international astronomy and how Chalmers’ research connects to what we can now observe with this new technology.

You will also hear from Christina Backman, Chairman of the Hasselblad Foundation, who will explain why the foundation sees long-term value in supporting Onsala Space Observatory and advancing frontiers in space science.
