Industrial Doctoral student, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Structural Engineering

Natalie Williams Portal is an industrial doctoral student in the Concrete Structures group. She is a member of the FORMAS Homes for Tomorrow research project. Her research focuses on the use of Textile Reinforced Concrete (TRC) in new and existing buildings. TRC is a recently developed alternative building material whereby traditionally used reinforcement in reinforced concrete is replaced by multi-axial textile fabrics (e.g. AR-glass, carbon). Slender, lightweight, modular and freeform structures can be designed using TRC, while nevertheless ensuring high strength and durability. TRC is also a promising building material for the strengthening and rehabilitation of existing structures.
