Eduard Hryha is researcher in powder metallurgy and metal additive manufacturing. He is also director of CAM2 (https://www.chalmers.se/en/centres/cam2/Pages/default.aspx ) - competence centre focusing on powder-based metal additive manufacturing.

His research focuses on:
- Powder metallurgy: powder manufacturing and properties, compaction, high-performance PM steels, tailored sintering processes, sintering atmospheres, soft magnetic composites (SMC), hot isostatic pressing, synthesis, etc.
- Powder based metal additive manufacturing: relationship between powder feedstock -AM processing – properties of AM fabricated material with focus on powder bed fusion processes (laser based and electron beam) and binder jetting, powder for AM and powder degradation during AM processing, AM process development, processing gas in AM, in-situ process monitoring, quality assurance in AM, productivity in AM, etc.
- Surface analysis using advanced surface-sensitive techniques: characterization of surface composition and solid-gas interaction on the nano-level using surface-sensitive techniques as XPS (X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy) and Auger spectroscopy
- Thermal analysis: TG/DTA/DSC/DIL in inert and reducing (e.g. hydrogen) atmospheres and vacuum.

Eduard Hryha has worked in the area of powder metallurgy for more than 15 years, starting from his industrially funded PhD by Höganäs AB at IMR SAS (Höganäs Chair III). Starting from 2017, Dr Hryha holds a professor (biträdande professor) position in powder metallurgy at the department of materials and manufacturing technology with research focus on powder metallurgy and metal additive manufacturing. He is one out of eight excellent researchers in the SIP LIGHTer. From 2017, Dr Hryha is director of the Centre for Additive Manufacturing – Metal (CAM2) and research leader for three research areas inside the centre. Broad national and international network​.

Main focus of the research:    
  • Powder Metallurgy – sintering of low alloyed PM steels, control of sintering atmospheres, delubrication, powder consolidation, powder compaction, hot isostatic pressing, soft magnetic composites, oxide formation/transformation/reduction during sintering of PM steels, master alloys, etc.
  • Powder based metal additive manufacturing: development of the new powder materials for powder based metal additive manufacturing methods, with focus on laser based powder bed fusion (LB-PBF), debinding and sintering process development for binder jetting, powder re-use and degradation in metal AM with focus on laser and electron beam powder bed fusion, processing atmospheres in AM, in-situ quality assurance and process monitoring in AM, post-AM processing, etc. Focus is placed on Fe-, Ni- Ti and Al-based alloys. 
  • Surface analysis using advanced surface-sensitive techniques in relationship to powder metallurgy and additive manufacturing processing – characterization of surface composition of metal powder in dependence on powder manufacturing method, effect of powder handling on powder surface chemistry and its changes during AM processing (powder degradation) as well as solid-gas interactions on the nano-level. Surface chemistry and its changes are studied using surface-sensitive techniques as XPS (X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy) and Auger spectroscopy.
  • Thermal analysis – Dr Hryha established thermal analysis lab at Chalmers with state-of-the-art analytic equipment allowing to perform high-resolution TG/DTA/DSC/DIL in inert and reducing (e.g. hydrogen) atmospheres as well as vacuum. Setup is extensively used for powder characterization, study of the sintering processes and sintering process development, etc.

Publications:
Author of about 150 journal articles and peer-reviewed conference papers. Author of more than 100 scientific reports for industry.
