Hannes research deals with ferritic stainless steel as interconnect material in solid oxide fuel cells. The interconnect material is exposed to a reducing atmosphere on one side (anode) and an oxidizing atmosphere on the other side (cathode). The working temperature is 600-900°C thus degradation of the interconnect limits the life time of the fuel cell. If this green and flexible technique should become economically interesting in the future the life time has to be improved. The focus lies therefore mainly in understanding the degradation mechanism in these atmospheres and in cooperation with partners from the industry (Sandvik Materials Technology and Topsoe Fuel Cell) improve the material thus extending the life time.
