Anna Bergek

Professor, Deputy/Vice Head of Department with focus on research, Technology Management and Economics

Anna Bergek is Full Professor in Innovation Systems and Technology Policy since October 2016. She studies innovation in mature industries and innovation systems, with particular focus on the energy sector. The aim of the research is to understand under what conditions mature companies and industries can remain innovative, how new technology can enter and diffuse in sectors that are in need of a sustainability transition and how energy and technology policy instruments should be designed to facilitate innovation and transition. Since 1 March 2018, Anna is Deputy Head of Department and Vice Head of Department with focus on research.
Why does it sometime take a long time for new technologies to develop and be diffused? Is it really true that industries stop innovating over time? These are some of the overall research questions that guide my research.

Together with my colleagues at Chalmers and other universities in Sweden and abroad, I study how industries change over time – in particular under what conditions new technologies develop and diffuse in mature industries and sectors, such as lighting, paper and pulp and energy.

I am interested in, for example, the development and diffusion of new renewable energy technologies, the importance of existing resources for innovation and diversification in mature industries such as lighting and paper pulp and the need for technology and innovation policy to stimulate and enable innovation processes in different technology fields.

The main theoretical foundation of my research is a system perspective on innovation. I am one of the originators of the so-called ‘functions approach’ to Technological Innovation Systems (TIS) and I have co-authored some of the most cited publications in this field. The TIS approach has not only spread within the international research community, but is also increasingly used by government agencies in Sweden and abroad.
