MVS seminar course, part B

The aims of this course are to (1) make PhD students be acquainted to different presentation types (licentiate seminars, PhD defenses, docent lectures, professorial lectures, and other invited/guest seminars), (2) prepare PhD students for public presentations of their work to different audiences and (3) promote interactions among different research groups involved in the graduate school.

Intended learning outcomes (after the completion of the course, the student will be able to):

• Prepare and deliver at least four presentations (two of these are for Part A) of own work to audiences with diverse research background.
• Write at least four talk-abstracts (two of these are for Part A).
• Evaluate and reflect on others' presentations.
• Write/give constructive feedback to colleagues about their presentations.
• Develop presentation skills through practicing giving presentations, receiving feedback from others (including pedagogical expert) on own presentations, and reflecting about others' presentations.

The format: Seminar sessions are normally held once a month during the semesters. Each session will have a maximum of four presentations. The time allocated for each presentation is maximum 20 minutes, followed by 15 minutes for discussion and questions. Each PhD student is expected to attend 75% of the seminars and give one presentation each academic year. Each PhD student who will present at a seminar has to prepare a short abstract and a title of his/her presentation at least one week before the seminar; these will be distributed to members of all research groups involved in the graduate school. In addition to these seminar presentations, the PhD students are also required to attend other types of presentations, such as licentiate seminars, PhD defenses, and docent- and professor lectures.

This course is mandatory for all PhD students in the Graduate School Machine and Vehicle Systems to get their PhD degree. Each PhD student keeps a record of activities that have been done within this course by filling in a seminar card. The card can be obtained by contacting the study administrator of the Graduate School Machine and Vehicle Systems.

Minimum requirement to pass this course: 80 hours in the seminar card (including 12 hours for giving own presentations); these 80 hours also cover the hours gathered to complete part A.
