Dynamic decision support for transformative marine spatial planning

The green transition is increasing competition for ocean space and marine resources. At the same time, marine environments need to be protected and over-exploited areas given the opportunity to recover. Meeting both these needs requires better methods for assessing how different human activities affect the marine environment – both individually and in combination.

DYNAMITE aims to contribute to transformative marine spatial planning by developing tools that link marine spatial planning with environmental management, monitoring and modelling. Using the Swedish decision-support tool Symphony as a starting point, the project will enable different future scenarios to be analysed and provide a better basis for decisions on how the ocean can be used sustainably.

The project will also improve how data, methods and models are shared and used by authorities, maritime sectors and other stakeholders. Particular attention will be given to shipping, whose environmental impacts are currently not sufficiently integrated into marine spatial planning.

The project is carried out by researchers, communications professionals and policy experts from Chalmers University of Technology, the University of Gothenburg, SMHI, Södertörn University, the Swedish Institute for the Marine Environment and BalticWaters, in close collaboration with relevant authorities and industries.
