Vidar Thomée
- Professor Emeritus, Mathematical Sciences
Vidar Thomée was professor of mathematics at Chalmers 1965-98. His main mathematical interest has been mathematical analysis of numerical methods for the solution of partial differential equations, first finite difference methods and from around 1970 finite element methods, particularly for parabolic equations. In these areas he has considered stability problems and error estimates within various function spaces.
Vidar Thomée is member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, working member of the Society of Arts and Sciences in Gothenburg, foreign member of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, and Fellow of the American Mathematical Society. He is honorary professor at Hunan Normal University, China, docteur honoris causa at University of Rennes I, France, and honorary fellow of Institute for Computional and Applied Mathematics, FORTH, Heraklion, Greece.
