Jari Kinaret was born in Kokkola in Finland. He obtained M.Sc. degrees in theoretical physics (1986) and electrical engineering (1987) from the University of Oulu, before moving to MIT where he graduated with a PhD in physics in 1992. He has been active in Gothenburg since 1995, currently as professor. His research focuses on electrical and mechanical phenomena on the nanoscale, lately in systems that comprise carbon nanotubes or graphene. Since 2013 he has been the Director of the Graphene Flagship, a large European research initiative.
