The Surface Area &amp; Porosity Laboratory is located at the Division of Applied Chemistry (Research Building 1, room 3016).Apply for access and licenses at the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="http://appcheminstruments.che.chalmers.se/default.aspx">Applied Chemistry Booking System</a><h3>We built a new lab with more capabilities! The construction started March 2025 and is now (July) nearly finished. Now everything will be set up and tested. Full access to the lab can be expected during second half of August.</h3><h3>As employee of Chalmers you can join this <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://teams.microsoft.com/l/team/19%3AmBZjior6WyvozbHqj5gXkGmUmRvqipmiIJ97-YesGAE1%40thread.tacv2/conversations?groupId=1439b4e0-a4b8-4043-8a8d-00e27332cc15&amp;tenantId=29147a65-536d-43f9-b802-e0a1b5cf9dbf">TEAM in Microsoft Teams</a> if you want to be updated on the progress and science around the Surface Area &amp; Prorosity Laboratory.</h3>In the Surface Area and Porosity Laboratory the specific surface area, active surface area (e.g. of catalysts), porosity of mesoporous (2-50 nm) and microporous (&lt;2 nm, e.g. MOFs, zeolites) samples can be analyzed. Additionally, physisorption and uptake measurements of water, CO2, volatile organic compounds, and other adsorbates are possible in a temperature range from -5 °C to +70 °C.If you are not familiar with the technique or would like some hints on what is possible and what to look out for I can recommend the following two videos by micromeritics: - <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rYbfZCYcJt4">Physisorption Concepts and Model Selection for BET Surface Area and Porosity</a><h1><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Px65z8TWoHg">- Best Practice for BET Surface Area</a> - <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://youtu.be/9EF8Fyd3p6o?si=-oDubbJuCgD13H23">Physisorption Data Review and Reporting</a></h1>You are of course welcome to contact me (Andreas) in case of questions.Our laboratory currently provides two instruments and will undergo a reconstruction in 2025 to increase our capabilities:<h3>Tristar 3000 (Micromeritics)</h3>The Tristar 3000 is a work horse especially suitable to measure surface area and porosity of mesoporous (2-50 nm) samples. Surface areas down to ~1 m2/g can be measured by nitrogen physisorption.We also offer the possibility to measure argon physisorption at 77 K bath temperature.A future plan for the laboratory includes the purchase of a cryostat so that Ar measurements at 87 K (recommended IUPAC standard) becomes available. Please get in touch if this is something you are interested in!Three samples can be analysed simultaneously with individual measurement protocols.For sample drying a SmartPrep drying station (N2 flow, up to 400 °C) is available.<h3>ASAP 2020 plus (Micromeritics)</h3>The <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.micromeritics.com/asap-2020-plus/">ASAP 2020 plus</a> instrument is a versatile instrument for physisorption and chemisorption measurements. It is equipped with a turbomolecular pump and a more sensitive pressure transducer so that measurements with Krypton (very low surface areas) and analysis of micropore size distributions (&lt;2 nm) become available.Gasses available for physisorption:<ul><li>- Nitrogen: standard</li><li>- Argon: currently only at 77 K (87 K may be future option)</li><li>- CO2: from -5 °C to +70 °C using a thermostat (ISO controller by Micromeritics)</li><li>- Krypton: for very low surface areas. Upon request, needs some planning. Please contact me if you are interested.</li></ul>Physisorption of VaporsThe ASAP 2020 is equipped with a vapor source. Primarily we can measure water physisorption at a maximum water pressure of 30.5 mbar (~22.9 Torr) in the temperature range 0-70 °C. This corrersponds to close to ~95% relative humudity at 30°C. Other vapors from liquids with sufficient vapor pressure and that do not stick to the dosing manifold are possible. Get in touch to discuss options.<h4>UPDATE: The Thermostat (ISO Controller unit) has arrived</h4>We are going to conduct some test and reference experiments and then make it available to users. With the ISO controller Physisorption isotherms in a temperature from 0°C to 70 °C can me measured. This opens the possibility for measurements of e.g. isosteric heat of adsorption.Sample Drying:The instrument has two sample ports for sample drying in vacuum and heating up to several hundred degree celsius. These ports can also be use to dry sensitive samples for measurements at the Tristar, if heating &gt;100 °C is not an option.<h4> Chemisorption</h4>Chemisorption measurements are conducted with a flow through reactor tube to record adsorption isotherms. For pretreatment, the sample can be heated up to 800 °C with a furnace. A typical application is the measurement of CO chemisorption on supported metal nanoparticles to determine available metal surface area as well as the particle's dispersion and mean size.
