Course specific prerequisites
The student holds a valid certificate for Basic Safety Training, an approved medical certificate for seafarers, a valid passport and a valid Seafarers book. Exceptions to passports and seafaring books can be made after special review.The student meets the requirements for completed credits to study in the current semester. Exceptions to the promotion requirements may be made after special review.
In order to complete On Board Training (OBT), the student is required to demonstrate sufficient knowledge and skills and to have an approach that ensures good maritime safety and good seamanship
Aim
The lectures are intended to prepare students for their on board training and provide students with the necessary knowledge of life at sea in order to adequately be able to assimilate the on board training. The on board training aims to educate / train students in the practical skills of previously obtained theoretical knowledge in operating conditions aboard merchant vessels in accordance with the requirements of the STCW Convention and to obtain the time at sea required by Swedish Transport Agency (TSFS 2011:116) to obtain certificate as deck officer.Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)
General learning outcome for all on board training - Mastering such practical knowledge, experience and skills necessary to serve as an officer on a merchant vessel - Demonstrate knowledge of and ability to plan and conduct a voyage - Be able to demonstrate detailed knowledge and ability to determine the vessel's position with terrestrial and celestial observations, as well as by electronic means - Demonstrate thorough knowledge and ability to maintain a sfae watch - Demonstrate thorough knowledge and ability to use radar, ARPA and other modern navigational equipment - Obtain and interpret weather reports from various sources - Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of emergency procedures on board - Demonstrate knowledge of ship handling and understanding how the maneuverability of the vessel can be affected by wind and current, speed, depth, etc. - Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of cargo handling and relevant regulations - Demonstrate knowledge of the vessel's main and auxiliary engine - Demonstrate knowledge of and ability to handle the vessel's ballast system - Describe the certificates and other documents to be carried on board in accordance with international conventions - Implement measures to protect the marine environment - Demonstrate the ability to plan and conduct fire and safety drills aboard - Demonstrate knowledge of medical equipment on boardContent

If the company assesses that the student shows such serious deficiencies in knowledge, skills or attitudes that there is a risk with reference to maritime safety, the examiner can with immediate effect decide that the student may not continue his/her On Board Training (OBT) on the ship in question. In such cases, the grade for the course will be a fail (U). The examiner, study counsellor and student draw up an individual action plan with the aim of remedying the student's identified shortcomings.
The course examiner may assess individual students in other ways than what is stated above if there are special reasons for doing so, for example if a student has a decision from Chalmers about disability study support.
