    Eligibility

General entry requirements for Master's level (second cycle)
Applicants enrolled in a programme at Chalmers where the course is included in the study programme are exempted from fulfilling the requirements above.

    Specific entry requirements

English 6 (or by other approved means with the equivalent proficiency level)
Applicants enrolled in a programme at Chalmers where the course is included in the study programme are exempted from fulfilling the requirements above.

    Course specific prerequisites

Teachers employed to teach at the upper secondary school level mainly in any of the following subjects: mathematics, physics, chemistry and technology. Teachers who supervise or will supervise MPLOL/KPLOL students in other related subjects (e.g. CAD, design, construction, programming, architecture) can also be admitted to the course. The teacher is nominated by the principal of the teacher training school and is admitted to the course by the examiner of the course.

    Aim

The aim of the course is to give the preconditions required to ensure good supervision for students in either of the practical teacher training courses within the MPLOL/KPLOL program:
    • CIU207 Learning and leadership in practice 1 (VFU 1)
    • CIU212 Learning and leadership in practice 2 (VFU 2)

Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

After completion of the course the student (supervisor) should be able to:

    1. effectively support student teachers in their planning of lessons at the upper secondary school level, with a progression and balance between cooperation and independence.

    2. systematically observe student teachers who are practice teaching in different situations (whole class presentations, individual pupil work, group work, laboratory exercises etc.), analyze their needs for guidance and recognition, and give varied, well-founded feedback which supports their development.

    3. together with student teachers further develop upper secondary teaching, based on scientific grounds and proven experience, regarding pedagogy, pedagogical subject content knowledge and subject relevance for upper secondary school pupils.

    4. support student teachers’ development of specific abilities required for the teaching profession, including verbal and written communication, use of digital tools, classroom leadership and counteraction of offensive behavior of pupils.

    5. develop student teachers’ abilities to adapt their teaching to different pupils’ needs, including preparation of the student teachers to be able to meet a broad spectrum of pupils regarding ability, motivation and special needs.

    6. effectively, professionally and empathetically themselves support the development of different student teachers who have their own challenges regarding e.g. ability, motivation or special needs.

    7. systematically evaluate student teachers’ competences and support their self-understanding in order to be able to themselves systematically develop their own competences.

    Content

    • familiarity with the program MPLOL/KPLOL
    • familiarity with the setup of the practical teacher training courses
    • learning theories met by the student teachers
    • methods for evaluation of teaching
    • feedback techniques
    • “difficult situations” for supervisors of student teachers
    • references and databases for deeper scientific basis regarding pedagogy and pedagogical subject content knowledge
    • systematic approach to abilities that student teachers need to develop
    • reflection on one’s own strengths and challenges as a student teacher supervisor and an upper secondary school teacher

    Organisation

Seminars (approx. once a month during the entire school year).
Assignments (one assignment to hand in before each seminar except for the first seminar).

    Literature

Scientific articles, reports and other material that the student teachers meet in their education as well as further material relevant for student teacher supervision.

    Examination including compulsory elements

For passing the course, attendance and active participation in the seminars as well as acceptable hand-in assignments is required. Alternative assignments are offered in case of missed seminars. If more than two seminars or two assignments are missing, further completion is required for passing the course. Upper secondary school teachers who are or have been master teachers for the program Learning and leadership can pass the course without requirements on attendance or assignments.

The course examiner may assess individual students in other ways than what is stated above if there are special reasons for doing so, for example if a student has a decision from Chalmers about disability study support.
