Eligibility
General entry requirements for bachelor's level (first cycle)Applicants enrolled in a programme at Chalmers where the course is included in the study programme are exempted from fulfilling the requirements
Specific entry requirements
The same as for the programme that owns the courseApplicants enrolled in a programme at Chalmers where the course is included in the study programme are exempted from fulfilling the requirements
Course specific prerequisites
The courses LMA401/MVE575 Calculus and MVE580/MVE570 Linear algebra and differential equations, or corresponding knowledge.Aim
The aim of the course is that the students are to attain knowledge of the basic principles and concepts of classical mechanics (mainly in statics), which is required for further studies in the field of mechanical engineering.Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)
- Knowledge and understanding
- describe forces as a vector using applicable linear algebra
- describe the relationship between displacement, velocity, and acceleration of a particle
- explain Newton's three laws of motion
- explain the basic concepts of work and energy for Classical mechanics
- Skills and competences
- conduct equilibrium analyses of two and three dimensional systems
- calculate the center of mass of different types of bodies
- calculate the kinematic history of a simple system of particles
- create and solve the mathematical equations to solve the kinetics of a particle
- Judgement and approach
- identify appropriate solution methods (equilibrium, kinetics, kinematics) for different mechanical analyses
- develop mathematical models for a given mechanical system and perform the appropriate engineering analysis
Content
- Statics: Fundamental concepts. Force systems and reduction of force systems. Conditions of equilibrium, free-body diagrams, system determinacy and indeterminacy. Centre of mass, centre of gravity. Friction.
- Dynamics of particles: Particle kinematics and kinetics; equations of motion; linear momentum; energy; work
Organisation
The course includes lectures and tutorials (70 h) and independent studies (130h)Literature
Ragnar Grahn och Per-Åke Jansson, Mekanik, fjärde upplagan, Studentlitteratur (2002). Sune Olsson, Formelsamling i mekanik.Examination including compulsory elements
The examination is based on a written exam, grades TH.The course examiner may assess individual students in other ways than what is stated above if there are special reasons for doing so, for example if a student has a decision from Chalmers about disability study support.
