Are you wondering which materials that are used to make batteries? How does a battery work? How is the state-of-the-art lithium-ion battery fabricated in both lab scale and industry level? Are you interested in the ever-developing battery technology in both materials and manufacturing? Then this is the right course for you, even if you don’t have a related background.
General information
This Tracks course will provide you the basic knowledge about lithium-ion batteries (lectures) and chances to fabricate the batteries yourself (e.g., lithium-ion battery) (lab-based projects). You will learn about the entire battery manufacturing process from raw materials to finished battery cells and battery packs. You will also learn how to analyze battery performance (e.g., capacity, cycling stability, fast charging capability) by yourself in the lab, which is a similar process to that used by the Gigafactories (e.g., Northvolt, CATL).
After taking this course, you will gain insight into various aspects of battery materials and battery manufacturing. Moreover, an interesting aspect of the course is that you will be able to spend a lot of time in the lab (more than 50% of the course time) and fabricate and analyze a working battery by yourself using different equipment and tools.
Prerequisites
All master’s programme students, PhD students and Chalmers alumni who are interested in battery materials, energy storage, battery manufacturing, battery technologies, and especially those who would like to learn how to fabricate the lithium-ion battery cell.
