Explore how quantum physics is being transformed into a practical discipline, and applied to real technologies in the field of quantum computing. Chalmers carries out internationally leading research in this area, and is in charge of developing Sweden’s largest quantum computer right here on campus.
Overview
Important dates
Join the second quantum revolution. The effects that make quantum physics so counterintuitive can now be turned into technology. They allow sensing beyond the standard quantum limit, lay the foundation for physically secure communication, and make it possible to build quantum computers that outperform even supercomputers on certain tasks. Chalmers leads the Wallenberg Centre for Quantum Technology, which builds quantum technology competence across Sweden and is building a 100-qubit superconducting quantum computer at Chalmers.
You study Quantum optics to learn the basic concepts and tools, and Quantum computing, where you learn to program a quantum computer. In Superconductivity and low-temperature physics and Superconducting devices, you learn how superconducting circuits behave. The courses in micro- and nanofabrication take you into the Chalmers cleanroom, one of very few in Europe that students can enter, where you learn to make superconducting quantum chips and other devices.
You are taught by researchers who build quantum technology themselves, and your master's thesis can become part of that work.
Graduates work in research and development on quantum computers and quantum devices, advanced electronics and other high-tech industries, or continue to doctoral studies. Quantum computing is pursued by large companies such as IBM, Google and Amazon, and by fast-growing companies such as IonQ and IQM. Several start-ups are based in Gothenburg, and IonQ has a local office here.
