The department of Mechanical Engineering has a high-quality laboratory structure and machine park. For some of the equipment it is possible to buy machine time.

Additive Manufacturing at Chalmers
AM@Chalmers offers a combination of high-resolution metal and multi-material additive manufacturing capabilities. The infrastructure supports both research and education, enabling development of novel materials, sustainable manufacturing processes, and high-performance components. WISE Additive, a national research infrastructure funded by the Wallenberg Initiative Materials Science for Sustainability (WISE), is hosted by AM@Chalmers.

Composites Lab
Chalmers Composites Laboratory is a research and user facility providing basic and state-of-the-art instruments with relevance to composite materials processing and fabrication.

Graphene and functional material lab
The graphene and functional material lab is equipped for the synthesis, characterization, and processing of graphene and functional materials for various applications including batteries, supercapacitors, sensors, and water treatment.

Magnetic Materials Laboratory
The Magnetic Materials Laboratory is a research facility providing basic and advanced instruments for the characterization, manipulation, and development of novel magnetic materials.

Materials Processing Lab
The Materials Processing Lab is designed to meet future needs of advanced research in manufacturing with special focus on facilities for metal cutting, polymer processing and powder metallurgical processing.

Production Systems Lab
Chalmers’ Production Systems Laboratory is an arena for research about next generation of workplaces. The challenge is to create intelligent production systems that support the Swedish industry with flexible and competitive solutions.

Rheology Laboratory
The Rheology Laboratory at IMS (Rheology and Processing of Soft Matter) comprises state-of-the art rheological characterisation infrastructure with a special focus on advanced methods such as nonlinear rheology and hyphenated rheological techniques.

Chalmers Rock Processing Lab
Many mining companies are interested in solutions that improve their processes. In the Rock Processing Lab there is the possibility of decomposing ore to different shapes and sizes. In addition, opportunities are given to investigate the energy utilization of the crushing process.

Stena Industry Innovation Lab
The Stena Industry Innovation Lab, or SII-Lab for short, offers top opportunities for the Swedish industry to test digitalized production of the future. Here, the engineers of the future will be trained and the industry is offered to test new technical possibilities in practical test beds.

Usability Lab
The Usability Lab provides opportunities for systematic studies of the interaction between human and computer interfaces. The research mainly concern different issues regarding HMI - or human-machine interaction - and the design of user interfaces.

Virtual Development Lab
The Virtual development laboratory supply an innovation environment in which researchers from the fields of manufacturing processes, production systems and product development work together with industry to develop new tools and approaches.

Vibration laboratory
The laboratories Vibration and Smart Structures lab are used both for research and educational purposes. Research topics investigated in the labs cover a wide range of vibration related subjects, from calibration and validation of computational models to measured data to energy harvesting, with applications within wind power and automotive industries, for example.

Laboratory for Sustainable Transport Solutions
Through a hydrogen infrastructure in the laboratory for sustainable transport solutions, we are able to conduct experimental research on hydrogen cars, engines, hydrogen jets and fuel cell systems, among other things.

Laboratory of fluids and thermal science
The Chalmers laboratory of fluids and thermal sciences is a Chalmers infrastructure hosting a world-class lab with a complete set of hardware resources for leading-edge experimental research in fluid dynamics and heat transfer. The lab general mission is to be an internationally attractive node, which provides professional skills and research equipment to a broad community of academic institutions and companies.

The prototype laboratory
The Prototype Laboratory is a living environment. The machinery whines, hiss and hammer while teams of loud voices decide on the next step of a process. Students from such areas as Mechanical Engineering, Automation & Mechatronics, Applied Design and their corresponding Master’s programmes get some of their education in our Prototype Lab.

The mechatronics laboratory
For those of you who want to discover the product developer within yourself and who are quick to reach for the soldering iron in this inspiring environment, there are several alternatives. Both courses and Bachelor’s projects in Automation must be taught and completed here.

Marine technology laboratory (MTL)
The Marine Technology Laboratory (MTL) is a small-scale infrastructure designed for use in both educational and research purposes. It is a facility with a water tank, which is able for testing of marine structures in water. Here, students as well as researchers have the possibility to visualize and measure phenomena with floating objects in waves.
