Welcome to a lunch seminar exploring how the rapid development of batteries is transforming the electricity system — and the societal challenges that follow.
The seminar will be held in Swedish.

As the Financial Times recently described:
How mega batteries are unlocking an energy revolution.
In Ukraine, batteries are being deployed to maintain vital electricity supply as power plants and grids are bombed — “Ukraine's DTEK invests in major battery storage to bolster energy security ” (Reuters, 11 Sept 2025).
In the United States, batteries have become the fastest-growing source of electric power after solar energy. In California, batteries are, on some evenings, the largest source of electricity. Most batteries, however, are installed in China.
But where does Sweden stand in this transition? How can batteries contribute to a more stable, flexible, and resilient power system?
The seminar will be held in Swedish.
It is free of charge, but registration is required.
A vegetarian lunch wrap will be served from 11:40, followed by coffee and mingling after the seminar.
Speakers:
- Tomas Kåberger, Moderator – Director, Energy Area of Advance, Chalmers University of Technology
- Simon Öberg, Researcher in Energy Systems, Chalmers University of Technology – Co-author of Three Scenarios for the Future Power System
- Bo Normark, Energy Storage Expert, EIT InnoEnergy – Founder of the European Battery Alliance, Fellow of the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences (IVA)
- Magnus Berg, PhD, Strategic Development/R&D, Vattenfall
In connection with the seminar, ABB’s Gunnar Engström Scholarship will be awarded.
About the scholarship
The Gunnar Engström ABB Foundation was established in 1983 with the aim of encouraging interest in research within the field of energy technology through the awarding of scholarships.
Gunnar Engström served for many years as a director at Asea, now ABB. On his 60th birthday, he was honored through the creation of the foundation that bears his name.
The purpose of the foundation is to support scientific research in energy technology by awarding scholarships to researchers active in this field at one of the technical universities in Stockholm, Gothenburg, Lund, Linköping, or Luleå, or at the Faculty of Science and Technology at Uppsala University.
