Kirsten Knudsen at the division of Astronomy and Plasma Physics presents her inauguration lecture for promotion to (full) professor.

Title: “In a galaxy far, far away…”

Abstract: Galaxies today are typically seen as spiral galaxies and elliptical galaxies. Spiral galaxies, like the Milky Way, continue forming stars, while elliptical galaxies have very little gas and thus little star formation. Looking back in time towards cosmic dawn, it is seen that galaxies can go through several evolutionary stages, for example galaxy mergers. One of the key questions about galaxy evolution is what regulates galaxy evolution, and in particular what regulates the build-up of stellar mass? In my lecture I will focus on observations of different types of distant, early galaxies, and how these results help shed light on galaxy evolution.
