Abstract:

Microwave radio system with multiple antennas is one popular technology for backhaul network deployment to reach the capability increase required for 5G and 6G. Antenna separations at transmit and receive sites should be carefully designed to ensure a proper phase relation, in this Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) system with strong Line-of-Sight (LoS) paths between transmitter and receiver.
During actual deployment, signal power and phase could be changed by various atmospheric and terrestrial conditions and cause availability and performance issues to such radio links.

The main focus of this study is to model the effect of atmospheric conditions and gain knowledge about how these atmospheric variations affect the performance metrics of line-of-sight multiple-antenna communication system. To qualify the atmospheric impact, MATLAB based ray-tracing simulations are conducted including atmospheric refractivity models and radio propagation models. The simulation results are vetted via comparing them with published literature and with other research teams.
