Abstract: This talk will briefly review the short but extraordinarily productive life and work of Alan Turing (1912-1954), with particular emphasis on his visions regarding what we now call artificial intelligence (AI). Current developments in AI will then be discussed in the light of these visions. The talk is aimed at a broad audience, and will mostly circumvent mathematical and technical detail.

Bio: Olle Häggström is a professor of mathematical statistics at Chalmers University of Technology and a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. Most of his research qualifications are in probability theory, but in recent years his interests have shifted more in the direction of global risk, AI safety and related topics. He is the author of five books, including Here Be Dragons (Oxford University Press, 2016) and Tänkande maskiner (Fri Tanke, 2021/2023).
