Abstract: The use of Baire category methods to study generic properties of group actions traces back to the beginnings of ergodic theory. In this talk, I will discuss some recent developments concerning generic properties of natural classes of continuous actions of free groups on the Cantor set.
I will demonstrate how this leads to the construction of many new examples of simple nonnuclear C*-algebras with stable rank one — an important regularity property for C*-algebras, which may be thought of as a noncommutative analogue of low covering dimension.
Based on joint work with Shirly Geffen and David Kerr.
