Abstract: This talk is motivated by the question of C*-superrigidity for discrete groups: a group is called C*-superrigid if it can be completely recovered from its group C*-algebra. It is an open question whether every torsion free group is C*-superrigid. In this talk I will be considering the class of virtually abelian groups, some of which also turn out to be C*-superrigid. One approach to proving C*-superrigidity is through the study of Cartan subalgebras. I will discuss this approach and provide a complete classification of Cartan subalgebras in the C*-algebra of the fundamental group of the Klein bottle. This talk is in part based on joint work with S. Knudby, S. Raum, H. Thiel and S. White.
