It is very unlikely that AI progress is about to come to a sudden halt, leaving GPT-4 forever as the apex of human efforts to build AI. Much more plausible is to expect AI to continue to develop in ways that will radically transform all professions and all sectors of society, including higher education and mathematical research. Filling in the details in such predictions is a more delicate matter.
