Abstract: The Sinai factor theorem (1964) gives that every ergodic measure-preserving system has, as a factor, an independent and identically distributed (iid) system of maximum available entropy. . In this talk, we will discuss various aspects of Sinai's theorem, focusing on how randomness from a source system is processed and redistributed to become an iid system. In particular, we will discuss recent joint work with Zemer Kosloff, where we consider the case where the source system arises from independent, but not identically distributed coin tosses.
