Abstract:
Interactions between light and mechanics provide a powerful interface between optical and microwave-frequency signals, with applications spanning classical signal processing and quantum technologies. A key challenge is to design optomechanical crystals with strong photon-phonon interactions and a high tolerance to parasitic laser heating. I will present our efforts to design release-free optomechanical crystals through both a new design pattern motivated by the physics of crystals, and through inverse design; an algorithmic approach to improve components beyond human capabilities.
