Julia Tjus: Somewhere over the rainbow: understanding the colours of the Universe
Professor at Ruhr University Bochum and Director of the Ruhr Astroparticle and Plasma Physics Centre.
Professor Tjus is awarded an honorary doctorate for her pioneering work in astroparticle physics, particularly in neutrino astronomy and for her research on cosmic rays. Her work with the IceCube Neutrino Observatory has significantly improved our understanding of the high-energy universe, including the discovery of neutrino radiation from our own galaxy, the Milky Way.
She has strong links to Chalmers, including as Jubilee Professor 2023 and through close collaborations in radio and neutrino research.
Herre van der Zant: When the position of every atom matters
Professor at the Kavli Institute of Nanoscience and the Faculty of Applied Physics at TU Delft.
Professor van der Zant is awarded an honorary doctorate for his pioneering work in nanoelectronics and nanomechanics. His interdisciplinary research spans from molecular components to quantum systems, with strong innovation and a clear link to Chalmers' ambition to bring basic research to application. He has long had strong links to Chalmers, including through the Advisory Board for Nano and collaborations within the Graphene Flagship and EU projects.
Babak Hassibi: Mathematical Engineering
Professor at Caltech in electrical engineering, computer science and AI.
Professor Hassibi is awarded an honorary doctorate for his outstanding contributions in communication engineering, control theory and machine learning.
Over the course of his career, he has made outstanding and high-impact contributions in these areas. His recent research on mathematical techniques for large-scale statistical machine learning has played a key role in analysing modern, complex AI methods. Hassibi has collaborated closely with Chalmers, notably by leading a thematic seminar on AI 2022, as well as through research projects with the departments of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and Engineering.
Marcus Wandt: From Chalmers to Space
Marcus Wandt is a test pilot and innovation manager at Saab and a European Space Agency astronaut. He was selected for the programme in 2022 and has been employed as a project astronaut since 2023. In January-February 2024 he made his first spaceflight, to the International Space Station as a mission specialist on the Axiom-3 mission.
Marcus Wandt was awarded the honorary doctorate in 2024 for his successful space mission and for his ability to bring the societal benefits of space research to life. Wandt is an alumnus of Chalmers where he is a strong inspiration for students, not least in the new thematic area of Space.
