It must have been fate! Or was it just chance? In life-changing situations it is often difficult to tell the difference between the two. And even within science, which ought to be able to distinguish between what must happen and what merely happens by coincidence, it is sometimes impossible to deflect the influence of chance.
Can probability and statistics tame chance, and do we even want that to happen? In every area? In science, lawful predictability is cherished; in life, many of us want to be able to break free from our destinies. But perhaps there is also a kind of freedom in relying on fate.
The evening consists of three micro-lectures with the historian of ideas Michael Azar, the biostatistician Anna Grimby Ekman and the author Marit Kapla. This is followed by a joint conversation on chance and fate, moderated by the historian of science and Glänta editor Julia Ravanis.
Anna Grimby Ekman is a professor of health-science statistics at the Sahlgrenska Academy at the University of Gothenburg, specialising in long-term pain. She is committed to combining methodological knowledge with applied research.
Michael Azar is a professor of the history of ideas at the University of Gothenburg. He has written around ten books, including Döden i Beirut and Amerikas födelse. His latest book is Ödets tärningar in Bildningsboxen 2024.
Marit Kapla is an author and journalist based in Gothenburg. She often builds her works on interviews and has published the books Osebol and Kärlek på svenska, as well as written the play E45 – ett vandringsdrama. Her latest work is the documentary poem 23 röster om Nol.
