One of the drivers for this seminar series is to get a glimpse of the many research questions, ideas, and results linked to the activities in our division. The seminars are intended to be very informal and we make plenty of room for questions and discussions.

Abstract: In this overview talk I will discuss some aspects of string theory and its relation to M-theory. In particular as indicated in the title, I will explain why we need string theory and what it really is, and end with a few words about how to use it to get information relevant for 4-dimensional particle physics and cosmology. My own current research interests will be briefly commented upon.
