Abstract

We present a solid foundation for the theory and practice of using pilot tones for estimation and compensation of phase noise in a communication link. Several phase estimators are analyzed and their pros and cons are illustrated. We, furthermore, present well-founded theory and practice of carrier phase synchronization in line-of-sight MIMO systems in the presence of phase noise. Relevant phase noise receiver compensation architectures are analyzed.
